Sweet 16-bound? Wichita State Must Play Better To Get There
... rest of its doubters, wrong. Just one problem. The Shockers won't alter any perceptions or advance if they bring Friday's effort against a Kentucky squad, assuming the Wildcats beat Northern Kentucky on Friday night, with a pair of possible future NBA lottery picks named Malik Monk and De'Aaron Fox. In the first half of Friday's win, Wichita State finished 2-for-12 from the 3-point line and 10-for-28 overall. The Shockers put together an impeccable defensive effort in the second half, holding the Flyers to an 8-for-29 shooting clip. But Dayton's engine is not comparable to a Kentucky offense ranked eighth in adjusted offensive efficiency. Fox's speed, Monk's explosiveness and a roster that features six players 6-foot-9 or taller will present problems on both ends of the floor for the Shockers. You ...

Kentucky Relies On Defense To Outlast Wichita State, 65-62
... bam, move on Wildcats, right into the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16. The youngest team in March Madness grew up in the closing minutes on Sunday and sent Wichita State to yet another second-round heartbreak, 65-62 in a South Regional game. “They're young, but they have a will to win and play with courage and are skilled basketball players and great kids who share,” Coach John Calipari said. The freshman trio made all of the significant plays in the final minutes. De'Aaron Fox had 14 points, including a late steal and dunk. Malik Monk blocked a shot and made two free throws in the final 13 seconds. Adebayo had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and he finished it off by swatting away Landry Shamet's three-point attempt as it left his hand with less than a second left. “He pump-faked, and I knew he had to shoot it so ...

In the sixth, the Shockers added to their lead, scoring Wright and Spring after collecting back-to-back singles. The Shockers then allowed two baserunners in the top of the seventh, but a foul-out to Jamele ended the game, giving Wichita State the 8-4 win. Wichita State’s Landry Shamet Taking First Steps On National Stage
... MVC Tournament. Conner Frankamp’s three-point shooting, Shaq Morris’ inside scoring and the inside-out versatility of Markis Mc Duffie give Shamet excellent tools to work with, and there’s much more at other positions. It doesn’t work smoothly, however, without a point guard. Shamet possesses the mental game to make it go, even after working at shooting guard for much of the season. His height helps pass and shoot over smaller defenders. Heiar sees a devotion to learning and organizing that he compares to Baker and Van Vleet. “He sees how it fits into his game and into the game of basketball and into our system as well as anybody we’ve ever had here,” Heiar said. “Fred and Ron had that knack, as well. Let’s say they’re guarding the ball screen one way — he understands how to read it, at a young age, and see the other three guys as well. If we’re in motion (offense), he knows how to move without the ball.”. Much of Marshall’s success is attached to point guards. He rebuilt the Shockers starting with Clevin Hannah and continued with Joe Ragland, Malcolm Armstead ...
Streaks On The Line In Uk-wichita State Game
... had none of its teams seeded higher than fourth in the NCAA field. Yet the Big Ten already has sent three teams to the Sweet 16 with Purdue, Wisconsin and Michigan advancing. In the meantime, the ACC doesn't have any regional semifinalists yet and is down to just two teams left in the tournament: North Carolina and Duke. North Carolina faces Arkansas and Duke meets South Carolina later today as the two traditional ACC heavyweights chase Sweet 16 berths. The ACC's struggles represent a stunning turn of events for a team that had done very well in March lately. Wichita State Shakes Off Dayton, 64-58
... on a drive to the basket during the first half. (Joe Robbins / Getty Images). NCAA tournament flash: Wichita State can play a little defense, too. Just ask the stunned Flyers. The Shockers' powerful offense stalled out until the closing minutes, but their defense carried them through to a 64-58 victory over Dayton on Friday night in the South Regional. Make it 16 consecutive wins for the Shockers (31-4), who brought their reputation for piling up the points on the way to Indianapolis, along with the feeling that they'd been slighted by their No. 10 seed. They made the gritty plays in a game lacking style points. “It was definitely something a little brand new to us from what we've seen in the Missouri Valley,” said Zach Brown, who had 12 points, including a late three-pointer. “But I don't know — we've just grinded it out. It was a tough game.”. And they were the tougher team. Dayton (24-8) came in with a wealth of experience, playing in its school-record fourth consecutive NCAA tournament. The Flyers start three seniors and have five overall, with a lot of shared tournament moments. This one ranks at the bottom. The seventh-seeded Flyers ...
Uk 65, Wichita State 62
... Wichita State's kind of game - an unsightly, tight, defensive grind of an ordeal - until a frantic finish in which the Shockers wouldn't fold. And the Wildcats were good enough to win it anyway. UK managed to match Wichita State's intensity on defense, though it largely struggled to find that consistent spark, failing to create a run that would bring the blue-shaded crowd to life and finally get some breathing room. Yet when it was still there for the taking in the final moments, UK eventually did it. It means something that Kentucky has shown it can beat a capable opponent in a game that didn't suit its style. Highlights were sparse, but the Wildcats survived and advanced to Memphis. End of the day, that's all that matters. THE FRESHMEN LED THEM. No one should doubt the strength of Kentucky's team after this. Once the season was truly on the line, the five-star freshmen did what five-star recruits are supposed to do. Bam Adebayo had another ...
