... Army. This formation, loyal to the Polish Government in exile in London, was composed of close to a half million soldiers. It is considered to be one of if not the largest underground organization in occupied Europe during World War II. On August 1, 1944 the Home Army launched the Warsaw Uprising, the largest underground operation in all of World War II. With the Soviets approaching Warsaw, the Poles believed they could liberate the Polish capital themselves. This would have been not only a military victory, but more importantly a political ones, as it would have given the Poles control of Warsaw before the communist Red Army arrived. Although determined, without outside support the lightly armed Polish partisans were doomed to fail. However, once the Uprising began, the Soviet offensive halted. Air drops of supplies were few and far between on account of Stalin’s refusal to allow British and American planes from refueling on Soviet airfields. For 63 days the Polish Home Army fought relentlessly against the German forces, ultimately capitulating. The Warsaw Uprising claimed ...

The Zookeeper's Wife' Is Important Tale Of Daring Heroism

... The people were, of course, then rustled into a ghetto, where Nazis treated men, women and children as if they were creatures in a zoo. Based on Diane Ackerman’s book, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” tells the story of Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Jan, who turned the Warsaw Zoo into a refuge in a “Schindler’s List” kind of story about saving nearly 300 people from almost certain death. The opening scene establishes an idyllic setting in the summer of 1939, as we follow Antonina (Chastain) on a bicycle making her morning rounds of the zoo, chased by a baby camel while passing elephants and giraffes and stopping to feed a hippo. Watching Antonina work to save a suffocating baby elephant, and getting filthy in the process, is a thing of beauty and symbolic of her life-saving heroics to come. Such beauty can’t last, however, and animal lovers will shudder at watching animals who are startled during a bombing ...

... the film’s message is. “We learn by looking at history, and when we look we see Hitler, Mussolini — one of the first things they did was manage the press,” she said. “That led to the atrocities. And when we look where we are now, we have to ask, ‘Are we going to follow in those footsteps, are we going to create another atrocity, or are we going to create a world where we protect everyone regardless of their ethnicity?’”. Chastain’s compassion for the underdog is well rooted. Though she doesn’t talk about it much, she was born to a single mom who at times had to shoplift food to feed a young Jessica and her sister. I gingerly broach the topic and ask how it impacted her career and life. “I think growing up in a situation where money wasn’t necessary for happiness actually helped me,” she said. “I realized when pursuing an acting career, it’s not something you pursue for money. I pursued it realizing I could live without. I grew up without. “I grew up without many things, and because of that, I have ...

... starring opposite them as Nazi zoologist Lutz Heck. Ackerman previously spoke to us about why this film is so relevant right now and elaborated on the Zabinksis’ bravery. Now Workman is chiming in with greater details on Brühl’s character Heck, as well as what she’d change about her industry. The Mary Sue: Daniel Brühl described his character as someone evolving from man to beast. Can you talk a little bit about who Lutz Heck was at the beginning of the film versus who he turned out to be at the end. Angela Workman: Well, Lutz Heck was such an interesting, complicated man. He was their friend, their colleague—Jan’s colleague. He and his family, his father and his brother, all had spent their lives running zoos. His father and his brother ran the Munich Zoo and he ran Berlin. It’s complicated to get in the mindset of Lutz Heck because he represents the psychology of the Germans at the time, of what became the Nazi party at that time…which was that he was a zoologist; he cared deeply for animals. ...

... went into the story of Linda.” God Knows Where I Am shot over two years in addition to a year-and-a-half edit. The Widers turned to actress Lori Singer to give voice to Linda Bishop through her diaries. The filmmakers said that crews along with Bishop were moved by the topic to participate, in many cases deferring payment. “We had the privilege of having a techno-crane for some of the bigger shots,” said Jedd Wider. “This is something you’d normally see in big narratives. The chief operator of the crane loved what we were doing and wanted to be a part of it. Also [cinematographer] Gerardo Puglia who has worked with big people who wanted to do it. Lori [Singer] also wanted to do it because she felt inspired by what we were trying to do. It takes a village for sure in any filmmaking, but an artistic film like this — really does take a village.”. The title ...

Photo: Anne Marie Fox, Focus Features. ‘Zookeeper’s Wife’ — World War II from inside Warsaw Zoo. 1 / 2. Back to Gallery. This is a film that gives you brand-new reasons to hate the Nazis, as if there could ever be enough. When the invasion comes, an invasion that everyone expects and dreads, it’s a calamity for the animals. Caro conveys the terror of the bombing by filming them from above, starting in panic as explosions are heard on the soundtrack. Soon kangaroos and llamas are running down city streets, in terror. Just to see something like that is to feel sick and want to apologize for the whole human species. But then, there are people like the Zabinskis to show that human beings are capable of profound goodness. For Chastain, Antonina is an ideal vehicle that crystallizes what she has been bringing to the ...
