Kentucky Basketball Trend Report
Kentucky Basketball Trend Report

... Ky. – Quick story, so stay with me. I went to a dog park Tuesday, and I doubt I'll go back. There was a bad dog and a human that was worse. Out of dozens of dogs, this one (and I'm leaving out the breed because that's not today's battle or discussion) fought with almost every dog it encountered. This dog looked miserable. Cold stare, rigid body posture, not friendly. And after the fourth awkward dogfight/encounter, a woman said it was time for the owner to call it a day and go home. The guy flipped out. He was aggressive. He was in the wrong. He made a scene, made bad points ("It's not like he bit anybody") and cussed repeatedly toward a woman who was simply looking out for the 99 percent of dogs behaving in the park. I was a decent distance away from all this action, but I'm not going to pretend I tried to act a hero either. Instead, seeing the guy's behavior made me think, that dog never had a chance. The dog's behavior - tense and ready for something negative to spring - seemed to be his reaction to living with his owner, an equally miserable-appearing creature. I'm not making a direct comparison, but all of that reminded me of La Var Ball, the nobody who ...

John Calipari After Kentucky Basketball’s Loss To North Carolina

... the last tape of the season. Watched enough tapes all year. Watched a thousand tapes. I’m not watching a thousand and one. But hats off to Carolina. What a great team. Well-coached. Roy deserves to be there. They out-played us, but I am proud of these guys. Really am. Q. Isaac, can you talk about your performance today, what was clicking well for you, and then Dominique, can you just talk about Isaac’s performance and how that impacted you all with the foul trouble that Coach alluded to. ISAAC HUMPHRIES: We were all really obviously excited to play this game, so I was in the mindset of coming out and doing whatever I could to help my team. And I was given a great opportunity, and I just wanted to take advantage of it. DOMINIQUE HAWKINS: We know how good Isaac is. In practice he shoots the lights out. We have a drill where we ...

Sorry Memphis, But John Calipari Has Been The Perfect Fit For Kentucky
Sorry Memphis, But John Calipari Has Been The Perfect Fit For Kentucky

... if he didn’t recruit those players he would coach against those players. He said at Kentucky, ‘I want to recruit the same players that Duke and North Carolina and Kansas recruit, and I can get them.’ And he was right.”. — Herald-Leader Sports (@Kentucky Sports) March 22, 2017. Todd admits he was concerned about the investigation into Derrick Rose’s eligibility at Memphis, but Barnhart received assurances from the NCAA that Calipari was OK. Instead, Todd was struck by something else. At the end of the interview, UK associate AD Rob Mullens asked about a player Calipari coached 10 years prior. Calipari knew where the player lived, where he worked. After the meeting, Todd called Mike Slive. The SEC commissioner, who had known Calipari during his time as head of Conference USA, said the league needed Kentucky to be Kentucky again in basketball. Calipari would make it so, “but you might have a knot in your stomach for a couple of years.”. If so, the knot quickly dissipated. There have been no serious NCAA questions. No serious off-the-court problems. Kentucky’s latest Academic Progress Rate score was ...

... so that means (De'Aaron) Fox is going to have his way or anybody else is going to have his way," Monk said. That's the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, according to the Associated Press. The guy who scored 20-plus points 19 times this season and made eight 3-pointers versus North Carolina, talking about deferring to Fox or anybody else. ► Sullivan: Flashy Fox leads Kentucky into Elite Eight. "We're just going to see what they're going to do at the beginning of the game, and we're going to go off that," Monk said. The beginning was slow for Monk against UCLA. He didn't find the net until nearly 14 minutes into the action. And then he scored 14 points, hitting 3 of 6 from beyond the arc in the second half and finished with 21 total. "I feel like we're unstoppable if he's hitting for us," Kentucky senior guard Dominique Hawkins said. Previously, Monk reached 20 points in a game only once since March 4 and ...

Kentucky Basketball's 3 Seniors Reflect On Careers
Kentucky Basketball's 3 Seniors Reflect On Careers

... down. Derek Willis sat against a wall, his head half-shrouded with a towel. Kentucky’s trio of seniors had their college careers end in heartbreak as North Carolina slipped past the Wildcats, 75-73, in an Elite Eight matchup on Sunday night. Hawkins and Willis played key roles for the Wildcats down the stretch of the season, and both played more than 20 minutes in the loss to North Carolina. Mulder chipped in for 6 minutes on Sunday. “I’m really proud of what Dom and Derek were able to do the last four years, something really special that not a lot of people do,” Mulder said after the game. “They were part of history and I’m really proud of that. I wish it would’ve ended up better for them. They deserve more than that. It means a lot to me. I’ll always love the game, love the school, love the state for what it was.”. While Mulder came to UK as a transfer, Hawkins and Willis were beloved for their Kentucky roots. Sunday represented the end of a four-year stretch for both. “There’s not a lot of Kentucky kids playing for Kentucky,” Hawkins said. “It’s everybody’s dream. To be able to play for four years here has been a blessing for me.”. Willis ...

White Privilege And Kentucky Basketball Are Synonymous
White Privilege And Kentucky Basketball Are Synonymous

... who calmly nailed a long two-point shot that gave Carolina the victory. Every year, someone loses a heart-breaker in the NCAA tournament. And every year, the predominantly white student body at some of America's greatest institutions take to the streets to riot and show their disapproval of the game's outcome. This also happens a great deal during college football's bowl season as well. But for Kentucky, this has become something of a habit. Back in 2015, 31 people were arrested near their Lexington campus  after losing to the University of Wisconsin Badgers in the Final Four.  They also raised hell after a postseason loss in 2012. Lexington, Kentucky, the very city in which President Donald J. Trump spoke about how real Americans stand for the flag while dissing NFL QB Colin Kaepernick for his protest action, is itself a bastion for protest. The Lexington Herald Leader published several videos documenting what ...

... in Las Vegas on Dec. 17. Monk poured in 47 points and the winning 3-pointer that day, while UNC’s Justin Jackson dropped 34. Player of the game. Do we even need to say it? Fox absolutely dominated Ball and the Bruins, pouring in a career-high 39 points (his previous high was 28 just three games ago). Monk kept Ball on roller skates, blowing by and getting to the rim at will. He hit 13 of 20 shots, 13 of 15 free throws, had 4 assists, 3 rebounds and only a single turnover. It was a virtuoso performance that might’ve made Fox a few million dollars. Draft Express had Ball projected No. 2 overall in the 2017 NBA draft and Fox going No. 6. Stat line of the game. Malik Monk was stuck in a six-game slump that looked like it might grow to seven on Friday night. He’d averaged just 11.8 points and hit only 5 of 26 3-pointers in those previous six games, then opened the Sweet 16 just 1 of 4 from the field and 0 for 2 from deep. Then Nuclear Monk returned with a vengeance. When he swished a deep 3-pointer with 2:02 to go in the first half, a Kentucky-heavy crowd roared. It felt ...
