Uconn Remains The Women's Gold Standard That Texas And The Rest Are Trying To Reach

... loss to UConn in each of the past two years. The Longhorns can advance to next weekend's Sweet 16 with a win Sunday over N. C. State. Wes Moore was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan when the oft-proclaimed “America’s Team” was still among the NFL’s elite. The women’s basketball coach for the North Carolina State Wolfpack was well aware that the Cowboys were — and probably still are — a polarizing team. “You either love ‘em or hate ‘em, but they still draw your attention,” Moore said on the eve of Sunday’s Texas-North Carolina State NCAA tournament game at the Erwin Center. Moore’s affection for the Cowboys came up Saturday while discussing the University of Connecticut’s dominance over women’s basketball. About the time the coach was making his remarks, the 11-time national champs were putting the final touches on a 116-55 victory over Albany, extending their winning streak to 108 games. The Longhorns and Wolfpack will meet for a berth in the Sweet 16 round of the Lexington (Ky.) Regional, which begins ...

Uconn Women’s Basketball Team Has Even Former Pro Coaches Impressed

... good appreciation was being with USA Basketball for the last eight years, watching Geno doing it in short pieces with them. The other thing that is really great is Chris Dailey. I have dealt with her a lot over the years. I dealt with her a lot of the time when the kids are going from college into the pros, and she has been so reliable and understanding that process and the players have been so mature. When I got them they were so mature as teammates, they were mature in how to practice and I didn’t have to do a lot, they came in ready.”. Hughes coached Jen Rizzotti from 2001-03 when he was the head coach of the now defunct Cleveland Rockets. He came full circle when he was able to work with former UConn point guard Moriah Jefferson, who was selected by San Antonio with the second overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft. Many years Jefferson would have been named the WNBA Rookie of the Year, but with her former UConn teammate Breanna Stewart on the scene, she had to settle for being a member of the All-Rookie team. Hughes is rather certain that will not be the final honor ...

Recapping The Second Episode Of Hbo's The March To Madness

... if they get beat in the national championship he would be cool about it and that the team “maxed out on everything we need to max out on.” As the first episode showed the coach’s intensity and passion, it’s hard to imagine a loss sitting well with him. However, it’s nice to hear Auriemma’s acknowledgement of the program’s historic success. — HBO (@HBO) March 8, 2017. 2. Injuries are a part of the game that is not often seen by the average fan. In this episode, the cameras followed junior guard Kia Nurse as she went through various rehab treatments for her ankle injury with hopes she could hit the court strong and healthy again. You see the time and various routines Nurse must commit to in order to get better. The episode follows her in the pool and the weight room and shows the technology behind the art of recovery. It’s a cool insider view to a huge aspect of the game fans don’t always see. 3. There was a Sue Bird sighting in this episode as the WNBA player participated in drills at the UConn gym one day. Auriemma spoke about just how hard it is to be a ...

... only a year removed from competition also allows Pavlech to relate to the current players easily, including 18-year-old freshmen like Crystal Dangerfield. Like Dangerfield, Pavlech was thrown into the fire as a freshman when injuries left the Terrapins short handed. She understands what the Murfreesboro, Tennessee, native is going through because she’s been there. “Chloe will talk to me and tell me, ‘It’s OK, it gets better at the end of the day,’ “ Dangerfield said. “I really enjoy having her work with me. Talking to her is like having a regular conversation and you can talk about anything. She always reminds me to stay calm. It sounds simple. But at the same time when things are getting thrown at you and yelled at you, it’s a great reminder and very helpful.”. But there was one situation this season that Pavlech could not have prepared for. On Dec. 29, the Huskies went to Maryland to take on the Terrapins at the Xfinity Center in front of a sellout crowd of 17,950. Instead of having the fans’ support and her former teammates having her back, she was on the other sideline and had to walk past ...

... which is like no other.  How do I know this?  It is because they win like no other.  That culture starts at the top with the leadership of head coach Geno Auriemma.  Auriemma on the surface seems like the brash, arrogant guy who you just want to go out and beat.  What on the cover may appear to be arrogance is a supreme confidence in who he is and what he is doing. This belief filters down to every member of the program.  When ESPN was promoting the women’s tournament a year ago, Auriemma exclaimed in the promo “we don’t want to survive and advance, we want to conquer and dominate”.  Such is the mindset and dominate they do. Speaking of the UConn culture, in a recent ESPN interview with Auriemma, he spoke of recruiting to the culture.  If a player is asking what their role is going to be with the program, he isn’t interested.  He wants players who will come, buy in, and trust in the process. I tend to watch UConn very differently than I do other teams.  When I turn on ...

... them was in high school and the other one really didn’t play much last year. Kia gives them confidence, she gives the entire team confidence, but she especially gives Crystal and Saniya a tremendous amount of confidence. “If you put Kia out there with the other four starters and you are one of the other teams that are playing against us, you start looking at your scouting report and who do we want shooting the ball? She is probably somebody who is going to be open more times than not. You saw today that when Kia gets it going from the perimeter, she makes everything.”. While both Auriemma and Nurse had their game faces on, there was a light moment after Nurse made a layup early in the third quarter on a bit of an awkward looking shot. “She shoots layups the Canadian way, they taught her how to shoot layups over there,” Auriemma said. “She doesn’t know if she should shoot it backhand or slap shot so I was trying to show her yesterday how to shoot it the American ...

The Huskies' Record 109-game Win Streak And Counting By The Numbers

... that banner season. 106: Double-digit wins during the streak. Yes, that means just three of UConn's past 108 victories have even come close to coming down to the wire. There haven't been too many stressful games for the Huskies faithful to watch. 80: Consecutive wins in AAC play. UConn hasn't lost in conference play since the AAC was formed in 2013-14 — a year before the winning streak started. 80: Wins while ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25. The Huskies have not been ranked lower than No. 3 during the streak. 65: Largest margin of victory during the streak. As seen two spots above, UConn hasn't played in too many close games. But its biggest blowout came in a 103-37 shellacking against No. 20 South Florida this past month. That resounding victory gave the Huskies their 90 th straight victory, tying the all-time record. 61: Victories by at least 40 points. USF wasn't alone in being simply overmatched. 46: Win streak before UConn's last loss. The Huskies' last defeat came on Nov. 17, 2014 in an overtime thriller against long-time rival Stanford. That ended a respectable 46-game run. Do ...

... and an absurd 70 percent from the field). She’s aided by senior wing Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (20.6 points), who has three-point range and is a tough mark. Freshman point guard Destiny Slocum is a terrific offensive player but she’s still a freshman. How she handles UConn’s pressure would likely be the key to the game. Maryland would meet UConn in an Elite Eight game, which Auriemma has long believed is the toughest game to win in the tournament. The Terps played the Huskies tight for a half before losing 87-81 on Dec. 29 in College Park. Speaking of size, Baylor has six players over 6’2’ on its roster, including 6’7’ sophomore post Kalani Brown, who led the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game. The Lady Bears are experienced (four seniors), deep, and always well coached by Kim Mulkey. They also will have the crowd on their side ...
