WASHINGTON — After two stories published Thursday in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch linked IU coach Tom Crean to the opening at Missouri, Crean distanced himself from those reports in comments to Indy Star. Indy Star columnist Gregg Doyel reached Crean on Thursday, as he was going over his final preparations for the Hoosiers' game later that day. Told that the St. Louis paper was reporting "mutual interest" between Crean and Missouri, Crean responded. "No, that's not true," Crean told Doyel. "I'm doing nothing but coaching this team. "Normally, I don't comment on my job or any other open job, or on any speculation at all — and going forward, this is the only time I will do it, here to you — but I want to put that to rest. Crean was fired by Indiana athletic director Fred Glass after posting an 18-16 record this season, a campaign that ended with an NIT loss at Georgia Tech earlier this week. Tasked with rebuilding the Hoosier program after Kelvin Sampson resigned amidst NCAA violations and sanctions, Crean was sub-.500 during his first three seasons before seemingly bringing the Hoosiers back with a 27-9 year and a run to the Sweet 16 in 2011-12. The following year, Crean won the first of his two Big Ten titles and the Hoosiers won 29 games. Things slipped after that, though, as Indiana missed the tournament in 2013-14 and was bounced in the first round the following year. Crean rebounded again last season, going 27-8 in another Big Ten title-winning season - which again ended in the Sweet 16. This year, though, was apparently too much to overcome.
