Slainte! A Stout Toast To Ireland’s St. Patrick
... of the craft brewing scene in Quebec. This is a rich stout with notes of dark roasted coffee and a hint of licorice. The use of oatmeal — usually shied away from by brewers because it can gum up brewing equipment — lends this beer more body and an almost silky texture. There’s also a slight buttery note, thanks to the use of an English ale yeast. (It also, as Mc Auslan’s Barry Pletch notes, helps make an excellent chili when thrown into the pot). Stone Xocoveza: $4.20 per 355 m L bottle. At 8.1-per-cent alcohol, Stone Xocoveza packs quite a wallop. While Arthur Guinness might recognize this as a stout by its dark chocolate colour, it’s otherwise about as far from his eponymous brew as a stout can get. It’s a seasonal offering from the bold crew at Stone Brewing, based in Escondido, Calif. At 8.1-per-cent alcohol, it packs quite a wallop, but it’s well-hidden, so be careful. What can hide that kind of punch? Spices (Cinnamon, chili and nutmeg, in particular), a dose of dark chocolate, some coffee and some ...
Sláinte! Belleville Celebrates St. Paddy's Day
... of flying flags in front of the Town Hall, the Irish national flag was hoisted during a ceremony that afternoon and the Essex County Police & Fire Emerald Society played tunes for those gathered. ST. PADDY'S DAY: Belleville pub owner gets props as a Grand Marshal. Nutley's Scott Sim raised the flag with his 22-year-old daughter, Morgan, who served as Parade Queen in the Nutley St. Patrick's Day earlier this month. Belleville has also raised flags in celebrating the Ecuadorian Independence Day , Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Columbus Day. "It’s fantastic. They’re doing it for many nationalities now, who currently make up the fabric of Belleville,” said Scott Sim, who also played the bagpipes with the Emerald Society at the ceremony in Belleville. “While the Irish aren’t as strong as they were in Belleville 50, 60 years ago when the town was ...

... you’re in luck—The Chieftains will spend the entire weekend in Northeast Florida, appearing at Jacoby Symphony Hall again on March 18 and at St. Augustine Amphitheatre on March 19 for the final performance of their 55 th anniversary tour. Paddy Moloney and company may have started out as a traditional Irish folk band, but their ascendance alongside the folk and rock ’n’ roll movement of the ’60 s made them adept at mixing contemporary and modern forms into their music. No, it didn’t always fly well with the purist crowd. But with six Grammys, an Academy Award for Best Soundtrack, and collaborations with Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Roger Daltrey under their collective belt, whether it soared or not doesn’t faze these Gaelic legends. Folio Weekly and the 78-year-old Moloney recently discussed Mozart, the Great Wall of China and The Chieftains’ future. Folio Weekly: The Chieftains will wrap up this U. S. tour St. Patrick’s Day weekend. How have the performances been. Paddy Moloney: Absolutely brilliantly. I’ve got a great team with me and we’re having a terrific time. We’ve had local dancers and choirs coming out to do some of the music from ...

But don't forget about the Irish pub the rest of the year, either. Scene & Décor The pub-style restaurant has dark wood, booths, tables and bars on two levels. It's a popular hangout for soccer, hockey and rugby fans, who gather around the TVs for favorite games. Even on a non-game day, the place can be rollicking. ... of Bailey’s Irish Cream and having a conversation about St. Patrick’s Day. My friend is an Irishman and very proud of his heritage. I was graced with his presence because for a number of years, we worked together. Once a month and over a glass of some type of spirit, it was our habit to sit and solve the world’s issues. Unfortunately, nobody ever listened to our solutions and so within a few weeks, it was time to sit down again and replay our scenario — good company, delicious cocktails and humorous conversation. That particular day I was telling him that one of our sons was born very close to St. Patrick’s Day and how, on his first birthday, we had bought the little tyke a shamrock plant to commemorate his special day. It was when I remarked about the shamrock plant that I saw the change in his eyes. They no longer reflected joy but a bit of sorrow. In his wonderful Irish brogue, he exclaimed, “You Americans have overdone St. Patrick’s Day! In ...

... dumplings. When I make onion or chicken soup with dumplings, I usually have to make a triple or quadruple batch of dumplings, but the pictures that I found of Bavarian dumplings show them to be large, about two to three times the size of meatballs, so you might want to make them once before you decide to do any doubling. As anyone with a drop of Irish blood is no doubt already aware, Friday is St. Patrick’s Day. I remember St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Friday twice before, and since Fridays in Lent are supposed to be meatless, it makes for a bit of a quandary, at least for the Catholics – one Bishop made an allowance for St. Patrick’s Day, and one did not. But the corned beef and cabbage or as in our case, the Reuben sandwiches, will taste just as good on Thursday or Saturday. Green beer is okay on Friday, but in moderation (which as we all know is not a problem for those of us with our roots in the “old ...

Sláinte! The Irish And Their Horses
... known as a Pooka. It can appear in many guises, but the most common is a large white horse. The spirit’s main purpose is to carry people away on a wild ride. In 1992, the Pooka was the subject of Into The West, a wonderful feature film in which a mysterious white stallion carries two gypsy children on a journey of self-discovery that begins in Dublin and ends at the shore of the wild western sea. But Irish horses are much more than the stuff of legend. Like tourism and whiskey, bloodstock breeding is one of Ireland’s most important industries. This vital economic resource centers on three breeds: the Connemara pony, the Irish draught, and the thoroughbred. The Connemara is the oldest pure Irish breed. Small native ponies called “breakers” were crossed with two imports, Welsh mountain ponies, which arrived with traders in the seventh century A. D., and Spanish Andalusians brought in a thousand years later. The Connemara’s size and sure-footed agility made them ideally suited for harvesting and hauling turf from the bogs of west Galway. In recognition of their historical importance, the Irish government provides a £500 grant for every ...
Sláinte Cheers ! Kells Hosts First Irish Beer Festival
... Mc Aleese was a baby, they moved to Portland and opened Kells here. It's remained one of the city's beloved institutions — especially on St. Patrick's Day. "I grew up in the bar here," says Mc Aleese, who runs the bar at Kells Brew Pub on Northwest 21 st Avenue while his dad runs Kells Irish Pub downtown on Southwest Second Avenue. "The most nostalgic thing is seeing everyone in green, with smiles on their faces. Even if you're not Irish, everyone puts on a green shirt and comes out and has a great time.". Kells has been the epicenter of St. Patrick's Day festivities for decades — with a weekend-long festival featuring traditional food, Irish beer, live music, dancing and an annual black-tie "smoker," a boxing event that matches Golden Glove boxers from Ireland against the top U. S. amateur fighters. With St. Patrick's Day festivities next week, however, they will kick it up a notch, with a first-ever Irish Beer Festival. That means there will be plenty more to drink than the ubiquitous Guinness. "I had a bunch of brewer friends bugging me. 'Can I have my beer there?'" Mc Aleee ...
Slainte! Tim Turley
... a lucky auld Irish American. Editor’s note: The following profile of Centennial’s Tim Turley first appeared in slightly longer form in The Hoisted Pint, a publication of the Colorado Emerald Society. One of the grand treasures of the Colorado Emerald Society is our treasurer, Tim Turley. Tim has the energy of a beaver in spring and the dark wit of an Irish pub patron. If you’re not careful, he may take the “piss” out of you, but it is all in good humor. Tim was born in Carmel, Calif. just before World War II ended. His dad was stationed at Fort Ord and sent to the Aleutian Islands. After the war ended, Tim’s dad opened a medical practice in Ridgefield, Wash. He was a country doctor and Tim grew up in a rural lifestyle until his sophomore year in high school when the family moved to Los Altos, Calif. In 1961, Tim entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Holy Cross, the founders of that ...
