... He trudged on day after day, never complaining, that omnipresent smile on his face lifting the spirits of everyone around him; his only respite being a few hours of shut-eye in some fetid, rat-infested trench. Tragically, his luck ran out on Aug.16, 1917. Dodging gunfire, he was dragging a wounded fusilier to safety when a German shell ended his noble life. For his gallantry he was awarded the Military Cross. The heroic chaplain buried somewhere in a Flanders field would always be remembered for tending to the wounds of countless men, saving the souls of numerous others and giving absolution to those who had died. On April 6, 1917, the United States entered the senseless slaughter. Its military forces (126,000 dead) would play a key role in bringing the conflict to a merciful conclusion on 11/11/18. Among the many regiments distinguishing themselves on the battlefields was the “Fighting 69 th (part of the 42 nd Rainbow Division), a primarily Irish-American unit from New York which had fought with honor in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars. This would have been fine and dandy, but Boulder went a step further by aging the beer in Jameson Irish Whiskey-soaked oak. The stout straddles the line between a regular stout and an imperial stout with its nearly 7-percent alcohol content, allowing for more malt flavor without any of the heavy alcohol effects. Tyrone Township is named for County Tyrone in Ireland, from which many of the original settlers came shortly after the potato famine hit their homeland in the 1840 s. County Cork, Ireland’s largest county, is also well represented in the hills south of Fenton. Many descendants of these families, including the Murphys, Mc Keons, Carmodys, Conklins, Conleys, Callaghans, Mc Carthys, Kellehers, Hogans, O’Connells, Foleys, Delehantys, Lyons, Sweenys and Mc Guires, just to name a few, continue to live in the Fenton, Linden and Holly areas. Ask any of them about their heritage and most will be able to trace their families back to Ireland and tell you from which county they hail. He’s such a nice guy. He says, ‘Of course, we’ve got to get an indulgence.' ”. Mr. O’Connor added, with a touch of blarney: “We’re not sure, anyway, why this Lenten period was invented. The true history of it goes back to where the pope had some buddies who were fishermen and they wanted to increase the sales of fish. That is the actual fact. I’m glad to see we’re straightening out the shenanigans of the past, shall we say.”. ... courage, earning the nickname, the “Fighting Irish.”  And I know a lot about the Irish - they fight.  They’re tough.  (Laughter.)  I know a lot.  I know more than I'm ever going to tell you.  (Laughter.). And when American Armed Forces joined the fight in Europe during World War II, 75 years ago, our heroic troops first stepped off ships in Belfast Harbor in Northern Ireland.
