... as fair as he would've liked on racial lines.". TV Talk: 14 shows to watch on television for the week of March 19, 2017. Bythewood recalls opening up his laptop and showing him a documentary on You Tube about Emmett Till, the 14-year-old who was lynched in 1955 Mississippi for his alleged flirtations with a white woman. From there, he says, "we began to have conversations about how the criminal justice system in this country has worked and how it has not worked." They even wound up incorporating a short story about Till into the show. Set in the fictional city of Gates Station, N. C., where communities are divided sharply along racial lines, "Shots Fired" could be described as a show that gives The Talk to the entire country, black and white. Unfolding over a complete, 10-episode arc, the story is packed with ripped-from-the-headlines allusions to cases of white police officers shooting unarmed blacks, but it also upends assumptions by asking viewers to think about how they would feel were the situation reversed. The first episode opens with the aftermath of a racially explosive incident: Joshua Beck (Mack Wilds, of "The Wire"), a black sheriff's ...

Shots Fired Is Some Of The Most Ambitious Event Television Ever

... or really anywhere, in its examination of the many factors that lead to these senseless killings or the redlining that creates these “rough parts of town.” But while it builds its case, Shots Fired abstains from playing judge and jury. It’s entertainment, after all, and not just a condemnation of institutional racism, though there’s no denying that pot shots are taken. The Bythewoods have previously stated that, at first glance, the series’ subject matter might not be for everyone, though it is intended for everyone (under the parental guidance admonitions, of course). But cutting such a wide swath does end up costing Shots Fired some of its momentum as it heads to its midpoint. The story struggles to balance its mystery and drama elements, and the same time constraints that give it a sense of urgency necessitate a certain efficiency that’s sometimes lacking. And the focus just widens as the story goes on, which works in the short term because it gives us more of intriguing characters like Aisha Hinds’ Pastor Janae—but it also has the potential to end up with too many disparate storylines or just a tangled mess. Still, it’ll be worth sticking it ...

... NYPD, and he felt the experience gave him the chance to see the world “through the eyes of the everyday cop.” What struck him by the meeting was the “sense of camaraderie between them and other officers. As soon as another officer rolled by, and they see us pulled over with the lights on, they pull up, and it’s an instant, ‘You good? You need us here?’” Wilds was particularly struck by the fact that “everything was brotherhood with them, and sisterhood as well.”. WATCH: ‘Shots Fired’ Is Entertainment That Is Actually About Something Very Heavy & Timely. Wilds and Moyer know that Shots Fired is at its root “entertainment,” but they hope the show can do more than just entertain. “[Creators] Reggie [Rock Bythewood]  and Gina [Price-Bythewood] have created a show that is about something,” Moyer said. “But we’re not lofty enough to think that we’re going to make a difference in the world, but it’s nice to open the portal for the question to be asked.” And Wilds agrees that the “pertinent and timely mystery story” will definitely ...

... Bythewood said. A crucial goal, the pair said, is to get viewers to consider the sheer tragedy of a child’s loss for a parent. “Forget race for a second, just connect with her as a mother,” Bythewood said. Or rather two moms, De Wanda Wise’s Shameeka Campbell and Jill Hennessy’s Alicia Carr. “Mothers from very different walks of life are suddenly members of a club nobody wants to be a member of, and in the course of the 10 hours their relationship evolves and the optics of that are pretty striking,” Prince-Bythewood said. The chance for long-form storytelling made the pair reconsider their original desire to pursue the topic as a big-screen film. But they were able to entice movie actors, including Helen Hunt, who plays the state’s governor, and Richard Dreyfuss, who portrays a real estate mogul. ...
