... birthdays. 3. Proving pi with matches. Watch the Chicago River Being Dyed Green in 15 Seconds. You can prove pi exists with matches, toothpicks, a pen, or anything else that is the same length, explained Johnny Ball, the author of “Why Pi? (Big Questions).”. “There’s a wonderful way to find pi for yourself. You find a floor with parallel lines; you find matches, pins, pens, exactly the same length. If you drop a hundred of them at random on the floor, the points touching a line will equal pi,” Ball said. Ousted S. Korea Leader Arrives Back Home, Expresses Defiance. The matches' length must be equal to the distance of the two parallel lines. After the matches are dropped, you multiply the number of matches thrown down by two and divide it by the total number of matches that touched a line, which will equal pi. This problem was discovered in the 18 th century by French mathematician Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. Check out this ...

... system that lets workers across the sprawling organization send or receive instant critiques of their colleagues. “The new technology means that moments after a meeting or project is completed, a manager can ping participants for reactions on how a specific employee performed.”. Labor losing ground: Workers are getting a shrinking slice of the economic pie, reports the New York Times. One possible reason: The rise of “superstar firms” that dominate a market. “While such concentration has resulted in enormous profits for investors and owners of behemoths like Facebook, Google and Amazon, this type of ‘winner take most’ competition may not be so good for workers as a whole.”. Street cred: The popularity of cocktails made with promethazine codeine cough syrup , a prescription pain reliever and cough suppressant, has created an unusual symbiotic relationship between the hip-hop community and drug companies, reports Bloomberg. “Users and dealers ...

Let’s Calculate Pi On A Raspberry Pi To Celebrate Pi Day

... expression of pi using my Raspberry Pi computer. Pretty cool, right? I wanted to somehow create something I can display in the hallway at school to share pi with students. Then they too might find themselves addicted to the awesomeness of pi. You can calculate pi all kinds of ways, but most people just Google it: 3.1415926535897 and on and on and on to infinity. But what’s the fun in that? Wouldn’t you rather figure it on your own? Of course you would. This is my favorite way of calculating pi. Generate two random numbers between 0 and 1. Assign them to the point (x,y), for example, (0.332,0.818). Calculate the distance from the origin (0,0) to this random point r. This can be written as r 2 = x 2 + y 2. If the value of r is less than 1, increase the value of a counter. I will call this nin. While you’re at it, increase another counter ...

Pi May Look Like A Random Figure, But It's Full Of Hidden Patterns
Pi May Look Like A Random Figure, But It's Full Of Hidden Patterns

... call a truly random number. And it actually contains all sorts of surprising patterns. Normal not random. The reason we can’t call pi random is because the digits it comprises are precisely determined and fixed. For example, the second decimal place in pi is always 4. So you can’t ask what the probability would be of a different number taking this position. It isn’t randomly positioned. But we can ask the related question: "Is pi a normal number?" A decimal number is said to be normal when every sequence of possible digits is equally likely to appear in it, making the numbers look random even if they technically aren’t. By looking at the digits of pi and applying statistical tests you can try to determine if it is normal. From the tests performed so far, it is still an open question whether pi is normal or not. For example in 2003, Yasumasa Kanada published the distribution of the number of times different digits appear in the first trillion digits of pi. Total 1,000,000,000,000. His results imply that these digits seem to be fairly ...
