... child to the collegiate level in sports takes more than just practice. Your child has to be talented enough to get noticed, and it's easier to get noticed when your child is on one of the best basketball teams in the country. For Zach Collins' family in Las Vegas, that meant sending Zach to the famed Bishop Gorman High School. Gonzaga star's No. 1 fan is his grandma. Holding hands on the couch, Nigel Williams-Goss and his grandma, Barbara Hingston, have nothing but love for each other. "He's probably the most precious person I've ever known," Barbara says of her grandson. Barta scores 37, Gonzaga tops Saint Mary's for WCC crown. Four Reasons Why Gonzaga Can Make Final Four
Four Reasons Why Gonzaga Can Make Final Four

... inability to reach a Final Four in 18 consecutive NCAA trips. Will the 19 th be different? Here are four reasons why this could be the year the Zags reach the Final Four. Experience matters. The Zags’ starting lineup of Przemek Karnowski, Johnathan Williams, Jordan Mathews, Josh Perkins and Nigel Williams-Goss boasts 548 career games. Top sub Silas Melson has 100 career games under his belt. Transfers Williams, Mathews and Williams-Goss combined for 231 games at their previous stops, but seasoning is seasoning and they played against high-caliber competition. Mathews played in the NCAA tournament with Cal last season. Zach Collins and Killian Tillie rarely play like freshmen. The Zags haven’t overlooked opponents. They’ve been relentless with 28 double-digit victories. They appeared rattled in their lone loss to BYU but bounced back to play well in tense situations at the WCC tournament. Balance tips scales. Four quality bigs, four quality guards. The Zags’ have employed an eight-man rotation ...

... face No. 6 West Virginia in a foursome hosted by Duke. Prior to that, the same sites had GU traveling to Los Angeles and Lexington, Kentucky. One caveat for fans: the NCAA has moved the first- and second-round women’s dates up a day. Instead of running from Saturday through Tuesday, they will begin on Friday and end on Monday. That means less time to make travel plans. Now in her third year as head coach, Fortier said she’s “not veteran enough” to accurately predict where GU will be seeded. The Zags (26-6) are ranked 63 rd by RPI but 38 th according to Sagarin. A win over ninth-ranked Stanford is offset by losses to WCC also-rans Pepperdine and Pacific. Also, the WCC as a whole performed poorly in non-conference games, hurting GU’s strength of schedule. Bottom line: Fortier expects a 10, 11 or ...

Gonzaga Has Done What It Needs For A No. 1 Seed

... record. Must Reads. Gonzaga isn’t overrated. Let’s break down the RPI, because the selection committee still uses that as a measuring stick for some unknown reason. Yes, the Zags are below other popular potential No. 1 teams out west named Arizona and Oregon—only ever so slightly. However, if you break down the RPI numbers, the Zags come out impressively on top. Gonzaga is 5-0 against RPI top 25 teams this season. Arizona is 1-4, Oregon is 2-2, UCLA is 3-2. You expand that to RPI top 50 teams, and the Zags are 6-0. Arizona is 4-4, Oregon is 4-2, and UCLA is 5-3. In other words, even based off this metric for dummies, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are still better than the competition (aka the team that wins the Pac 12 Championship). Oregon, the top challenger to the Zags No. 1 throne, has a BYU-esque loss (at Colorado), as well as a thorough drubbing by Baylor, a close loss against UCLA, and a loss against Georgetown. That latter loss is important. This isn’t the Georgetown of yesteryear. This is the Georgetown that very well may not make the NCAA Tournament. UCLA’s resume sits a bit better. They own losses to Oregon and USC on ...

... Montana side of Lookout Pass, a snow slide blocked the road and slowed travel. Determined to watch the Bulldogs, the La Rocks turned around and took an alternate route. The La Rocks took two-lane highways from St. Regis to Sandpoint. It took an extra three hours to reach Spokane. “We are skiers,” Alana said. “All the years that we have been skiing when it says 'emergency travel only', that’s when the powder is good.”. Snowy conditions don’t stop the La Rocks, but they do check the weather and would consider driving over a day early if the conditions are too severe. The La Rocks are accustomed to inclement weather. “In Butte we can get (snow) any month out of the year,” Alana said. The last few years they have been lucky and dodged the worst winter storms. However, Alana could remember one year when they saw a bad accident almost every drive. The La Rocks’ connections to ...
