Mindless Entertainment Or The Last Remnant Of Classical Civilization
Mindless Entertainment Or The Last Remnant Of Classical Civilization

... last remnant of classical civilization. John J. Conley March 23, 2017. Wheel of Fortune: Mindless entertainment or the last remnant of classical civilization. It’s 7:00 PM. Like millions of other Americans, I am perched in front of what my grandmother called “the last vestige of Western civilization”: “Jeopardy!” With the dapper Alex Trebek as our cicerone, I try to outguess the contestants as we negotiate state capitals, French monarchs and the Book of Exodus. “Jeopardy!” celebrates intelligence, memory, alertness and self-mastery, with luck occasionally making an entry. Fortunes can be won or lost on the Daily Double or Final Jeopardy. But even here, strategic skill is awarded—and applauded. Life here is rational. It is mastered through hard work, study, eagerness and fair play. Awards are commensurate with merit. It’s 7:30 PM. I rush to change the channel to avoid the Las Vegasesque screams and set of “Wheel of Fortune.” At least, I used to. What at first seemed to be mindless entertainment seems to me now something more profound. It is a neon-lit reminder that much of ...

Alibaba Acquires Damai For Entertainment Boost
Alibaba Acquires Damai For Entertainment Boost

... to produce its own in-house video content, it’s reasonable to expect Alibaba to begin doing so as well. The question will be if it organically grows that capability, or decides to acquire it by purchasing an entertainment studio in order to speed up its time to market. To that end, Alibaba’s corporate venture arm has been active in recent years, investing in potentially complementary businesses such as Damai and others that fit its expansionary strategy. For example, it invested in Qyer ’s $60 million round in early 2016. Qyer is a China-based online social network for travel enthusiasts that enables them to exchange photos, experiences, and notes about their travel. It’s not difficult to see Qyer expanding into offering travel bookings after growing its social network and being acquired by Alibaba when it reaches a certain level of market penetration. Alibaba has also invested in China’s dominant ride sharing ...

Survivor' Host Jeff Probst Weighs In On The Most Chaotic Tribal Council Ever
Survivor' Host Jeff Probst Weighs In On The Most Chaotic Tribal Council Ever

... and with one goal: WIN. If you are a player, you better be tracking the game and how it is evolving because I assure you most of the other players are and you do not want to be left behind. Watch PEN Fan Forum: Survivor, on the new PEOPLE/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN)  here , or download the free app on your Smart TV, mobile and web devices. I’ve never seen a more chaotic Tribal Council in my life. You had two giant huddles at one point, along with several other smaller huddles, side conversations, and whispering at various times. You also had JT playing double agent and relaying voting information to Brad while Hali was either pretending to play double agent or legitimately trying to get Brad out — I’m still not 100 percent sure. Tell us what it was like on the scene there and what struck you most about this insanity. Tribal was electric. It was thrilling. For me, the reason it was so exciting is because I had a ringside seat to watching some truly great players going full tilt boogie knowing they were risking everything with every move they made. What you saw is exactly what happened — it just broke open. It makes ...

Rotten Tomatoes Is 'the Destruction Of Our Business,' Says Director
Rotten Tomatoes Is 'the Destruction Of Our Business,' Says Director

... Rotten Tomatoes score?’ And that’s sad, because the Rotten Tomatoes score was so low on Batman v Superman I think it put a cloud over a movie that was incredibly successful.”. Directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman cost about $250 million to make and grossed nearly $900 million worldwide — despite being considered a disappointment (with a 27 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). “People don’t realize what goes into making a movie like that,” Ratner continued. “It’s mind-blowing. It’s just insane, it’s hurting the business, it’s getting people to not see a movie. In Middle America it’s, ‘Oh, it’s a low Rotten Tomatoes score so I’m not going to go see it because it must suck.’ But that number is an aggregate and one that nobody can figure out exactly what it means, and it’s not always correct. I’ve seen some great movies with really abysmal Rotten Tomatoes scores. What’s sad is film criticism has disappeared. It’s really sad.”. Some other popular titles with low Rotten Tomatoes scores include Home Alone ...

... original cast, plus dozens more, including Naomi Watts, James Belushi, Michael Cera, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, and many more in roles large and small. Don’t ask the spoiler-averse Lynch about plot or characters. The quirky bird won’t even confirm if the original cast will be playing their original characters, with one exception: Mac Lachlan is suited up to play Cooper once again. “I think it took me six hours and a few cups of coffee to read. But it was wonderful,” says Mac Lachlan of the first time he read the 400-plus page script. Watch the cast discuss the show’s odd universe and the upcoming revival in the new People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN) special EW Reunites: Twin Peaks here , or download the free app on your Smart TV, mobile and web devices. Agent Cooper was the subject of the original show’s infamously disturbing and infuriating unresolved cliffhanger. After venturing into the otherworldly realm of The Black Lodge to rescue his girlfriend, the dogged detective was assaulted by a dark doppelganger, who then took his place in the real world, possessed with the spirit of a denim-clad succubus named BOB (the late ...

New Magic Entertainment Complex Moves Forward
New Magic Entertainment Complex Moves Forward

... Mar 22, 2017. ORLANDO, Fla. —. A demolition project in the 3300 block of West Colonial Drive is key to the future development of downtown Orlando, WESH 2 News has learned. The closed Parkwood Inn and a former restaurant are being razed or rebuilt, along with the former motel’s rooms, to accommodate the new Orlando Union Rescue Mission’s new home. The 69-year-old facility's board of directors and Christian ministry agreed in December to purchase the land and to build a new chapel, office and dining hall and to reconstruct the living areas. The rescue mission currently serves 500 meals a day. That will increase to 700 a day when the new operation is complete and open by Thanksgiving. The number of beds will increase from 120 to 200. "The chapel will be right in the middle here,” said Freddy Clayton, president of the rescue Mission. Clayton showed WESH 2 News how quickly the project is coming together. "It's fabulous as a win-win proposition for the city, for the mission, for the ...
