... contributor on this year’s team except one is at least a sophomore, and all of them have made year-over-year strides. Butler’s made some shrewd roster moves around the edges to help the cause. Playmaking guard Tyler Lewis transferred from NC State before Holtmann took over, and he’s become an important bench player down the stretch. Guard Kethan Savage is a George Washington transfer who’s replaced Lewis in the starting five and allows Holtmann to play a bit bigger. (Lewis is 5’11, and Savage is 6’3.). Butler is set up to keep being good, no matter how this year ends. The Bulldogs will lose a lot after this season, to be sure. Chrabascz, Lewis, and Savage are all out of eligibility. Martin doesn’t seem like he’d jump early to the NBA, but you never know. Butler’s No. 2, No. 5, and No. 7 scorers, at least, will leave. But by now, Butler’s become a destination. The Bulldogs aren’t going to recruit like a Kentucky or a Duke, but their talent acquisition is getting better all the time. They landed the best ...

... Petcash, a senior guard, who averages 20, was held to eight points and took only six shots. Butler played a diamond-and-one defense against Petcash for much of the first half and it limited Petcash’s offensive touches. Jurkovec, a junior forward who averages 16, had 11 points, but only four in the second half. Andrew Kristofic, a sophomore center who averages 11, had 12 points, but only one in the second half. “If you would’ve told me before the game that Andrew and myself wouldn’t have 20 points between us, I would think we might be in trouble,” Jurkovec said. “But I knew Nolan was going to step up one of these games.”. Besides Rausch, Pine-Richland got eight points from senior guard Evan Luellen and senior guard Sean Colosimo came off the bench to hit a big 3-pointer to give the Rams a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Pine-Richland pushed the advantage to 54-47 before Butler (19-10) cut it to 57-55 with ...

Underdog? What Underdog? Butler's Kamar Baldwin Has Always Been A Star

... "I've never thought about myself as an underdog," Baldwin says. "I just love to play, so I play. And anyone who thinks this team is an underdog doesn't know the history of Butler basketball.". Milwaukee was too far a drive—or too expensive a flight—for most folks from Winder. But Friday afternoon, Kay and Jamie will drive to Memphis, Tennessee, for the South Regional semifinals to see their boy play in person for the third time this season. And on the road beside them will be Morris, who has coordinated a caravan that will carry 10 of the Apalachee faithful. "We may not be many from Winder in the stands," Morris says, "but they'll hear us rooting for Kamar. And we plan to stay through Sunday.". Staying through Sunday would mean Baldwin and the Bulldogs knocked out No. 1-seeded North Carolina in the Sweet 16. Analytics and oddsmakers make such a win out to be a long shot, but the road-trippers from Winder are buoyant. They know Butler has a secret weapon, a ...

Purdue's Vince Edwards (12) reacts after dunking during Saturday's NCAA tournament game against Iowa State in Milwaukee. AP Photo/MORRY GASH. INDIANAPOLIS — Coach Matt Painter kept believing in his team even as he watched Purdue fritter away a 19-point lead. He did, after all, recruit these players to excel in tough times. And he did spend two years using the lessons from consecutive overtime losses in the NCAA Tournament to show his team what it took to survive in March. So when the Boilermakers steadied themselves, retook the lead and reached their first Sweet 16 in seven years, ...

... an opening sequence of call-and-response scoring, helped the Vikings build a double-digit lead early in the second quarter. He scored all 16 of his points in the first half to book VASJ’s fifth consecutive trip to a state final with a 73-50 victory over Fairland. “We have a chance to go out winning our last game,” Butler said. “Most seniors, they played their senior year and don’t win their last games. Only four teams win their last game and this is a great opportunity for us.”. Butler plays at one speed — very, very low, according to coach Babe Kwasniak — but his scoring sparked the Vikings after the contest’s early pace waned. He trucked through the paint for a driving, underhanded scoop layup which put the Vikings up, 9-8, then canned a pair of deep 3-pointers. He scored nine points of the Vikings’ first-quarter 18, and swung momentum which VASJ never relinquished. Alonzo Gaffney led all scorers ...

Holtmann did not know Tom Crean had been fired at Indiana when he was asked about it during the postgame. He took the opportunity to criticize the firing of John Groce, who was Holtmann’s teammate at Taylor. Holtmann said Groce was “close to turning the corner” at Illinois. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Tom and how his team plays,” Holtmann  said. “I had one of my closest friends lose a job not too long ago at Illinois, and listen, we all get into this knowing the deal. “Do I disagree with those decisions? Absolutely. Absolutely, I do.”. Holtmann’s name has popped up in connection with multiple job openings and will ...
