World Series Predictions
... 1976. The 2017 MLB season is officially underway, and all 30 teams begin the campaign with the hope that they’ll be able to hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy this fall. That moment is still nearly seven months away however, so for now, the question needs to be asked: which team will ultimately win it all and stand atop the baseball world in 2017. Will the Chicago Cubs repeat as World Series champions? Will a big-budget team like the Boston Red Sox or Los Angeles Dodgers dethrone the Cubs? Can the Cleveland Indians end their title drought, now the longest in the sport. We won’t know the answer until November, but for now, here are our playoff picks. Restaurant Gunfire That Left 4 Dead Was 'Retaliation': Cops. If that looks like a lot of chalk in the National League, it is. All five of those teams made the postseason last year, and while there are certainly teams that could jump into the fray, like the Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates, but the five teams that made the postseason a year ago managed to keep their rosters mostly intact, and they have the skill necessary to make a repeat playoff appearance. The American League is ...

Best And Worst Case For Every Team
... - Heyward spent the offseason trying to retool or rediscover his swing. The Cubs will probably be pretty good again even if Heyward doesn't hit. But it wouldn't hurt if he did. 2017 projected record: 87-75 (first in AL Central). World Series odds: 5-1. 1. Best case: While other teams fight for their lives in September, the Indians get 20 games against projected losing teams. If they can overcome their injury problems and the offense is as good as expected, they might even clinch early enough to rest their pitching staff in time for the postseason. 2. Worst case: Seven games against the Red Sox in August contribute to the team's toughest month. If injuries to Jason Kipnis , Michael Brantley , Carlos Carrasco and others linger, it could snowball and let one of Cleveland's AL Central rivals sprint past its preseason forecast. 3. Swing factors: If the Tigers or Royals are threatening Cleveland's spot in the standings, 10 games against those two teams in September may decide the issue. And the health of ...
If Rule Changes Like The International Tiebreaker Make Mlb More Exciting, They Can't Be Wrong
... now rare. Advanced metrics are playing an increased role in decision making. Recent rule changes were initially considered assaults on the sanctity of the game. The so-called Posey Rule to reduce collisions by outlawing catchers’ blocking home plate and the Utley Rule that banished the takeout slide at second base are two examples. Baseball survived them. The international tiebreaker wouldn’t hurt baseball any more than the shootout hurt soccer or hockey. In the playoffs, sure, let the two teams decide a winner the old-fashioned way. But, really, what is gained from extending a regular-season game in May. The loss is the novelty of watching a position player take the mound, but that almost never happens. The last time a Dodgers position player pitched in a regular-season game was in 2014. As it is, too ...

Ranking Every Team's 2017 Giveaways From 1 To 30
... that you’ll disagree and that’s OK. Disagreements about ballpark giveaways is hardly anything that should anger anyone. In that vein, I’m partial to certain things, such as bobbleheads. However, just a run-of-the-mill player bobblehead isn’t going to cut it. We need creativity. Speaking of which, creativity with any item is a good way to make the list. Some teams are outstanding about this, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers , Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners. Frankly, some other teams are pretty boring, such as the San Diego Padres , Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles. The rankings below are just of the individual items, not the teams’ promotional calendar as a whole (the Dodgers would be No. 1 in the latter case). I should also point out that each of the 30 items on here are great and that a lower rankings doesn’t mean that something is bad. So, again, I went through each team’s promotional calendar, picked what I thought is the best giveaway and ranked those 30. Let’s roll. 30. Padres. Aug. 19, Hall of Fame giveaway. We don’t even know what the giveaway is, but this is an incredibly weak promotional ...
