Weird Weather Impacts Some Plants, Wildlfie

... Press. A Canada goose paddles past a painted turtle out of hibernation Tuesday in New York's Central Park. Crocuses, cherry trees, magnolia trees are blooming several weeks early because of an unusually warm February. By John Hayes / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At least twice in 2017, temperatures in Pittsburgh changed about 50 degrees in little more than 24 hours, and the region basked for as long as a week in unseasonable, weirdly warm weather. For people, it’s just a matter of grabbing a different jacket. But for some plants and wildlife, wild temperature swings and “false spring” can upset natural rhythms in ways that can last for months. “Our daffodils are 8 inches tall. Plants are up; buds are swollen and willing to pop. If the buds flower and it stays like this, we’ll just have an early spring,” said biologist and outdoors writer Scott Shalaway of Cameron, W. Va. “But if it gets very cold again — say we get a week of subfreezing temperature in the fourth week of March, which is very possible — all of those flowers would freeze. There’d be ...

... get rid of,” they said, while pointing to “a chasm between temperatures and dew points in the lower third of the troposphere.”. “What happened was, last night we had a pocket of dry air, 15-25,000 feet up in the sky that inhibited precipitation from forming,” Fred Mc Mullen, the warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Moon Township, said. KDKA’s Sarah Arbogast Reports. Mc Mullen says no moisture means no snow, at least for Pittsburgh. He said that dry air pocket stretched from about Youngstown, Ohio to Indiana, Pennsylvania. Other locations nearby like Garrett County, Maryland got the snow as predicted. “With every system there’s always a chance of this could happen or that could happen, the atmosphere is a big puzzle and if you’re missing two or three pieces of that puzzle, ...

Friday's Warm Temperatures Break 1906 Record High
Friday's Warm Temperatures Break 1906 Record High

... At Laurel Mountain, seven of 20 slopes were open and 17 of 26 at Hidden Valley. Historically, warm stretches are not unheard of in the Pittsburgh region. In March 2012, there was an 11-day stretch of warm weather and 10 days of unusually mild temperatures from Nov. 28 to Dec. 7 in 1998, according to the weather service. For gardeners worried about their early-blooming perennials, there’s little risk of them being harmed by future frosts unless temperatures drop into the single digits, said Sandy Feather, commercial extension educator at Penn State Extension of Allegheny County. While it’s not essential, she said that those who are still concerned could cover their plants with something light such as a garden blanket to keep frost off the flowers, “but never use plastic since it conducts cold,” she said. This weekend, temperatures are forecast to drop: Saturday will see a high in the 50 s before plummeting into the upper 20 s with a 90 percent chance of showers, Mr. Hendricks said. But in the golden afternoon Friday, Pittsburghers cared only about the warmth. Kiona Hall, a 29-year-old healthcare specialist from Plum, enjoyed the weather along the North Shore Riverfront ...

Potential Exists For Big Snowfall This Weekend
Potential Exists For Big Snowfall This Weekend

... the weekend.  At this point, it appears if we did see a big snow; the snow would start falling late on Saturday afternoon and would continue on Sunday. (Photo Credit: Pivotal Weather). What we don’t know is a lot longer than what we do know. This system bringing us snow will be in the form of a mid-level low. We cannot be sure the strength of the system this far out. Other things still not known are timing, potential moisture available and the exact track of the system. Even if this system is as potent as model data continues to show, the chance of it actually occurring (as data is showing) is still pretty low. Any posts that try to make a forecast with track and or snow totals more than three days out should be looked at skeptically. We will be watching closely the track and the big snow potential all week long.  This may be a good time to double check your emergency ...

... game at Heinz Field. Temperatures have pushed well above the average high for this time of year. Over the past week, six days have hit 60 degrees or more, with the 70 s already in place Friday. The surge of warm air isn’t the only concern for the hockey game this weekend. Thunderstorms are expected to fire up late Friday night. “The Storm Prediction Center has the western half of the Pittsburgh area in a marginal risk for severe weather late Friday night,” said Severe Weather Team 11 meteorologist Scott Harbaugh. “Just the far eastern counties are in that risk Saturday.”. Download the WPXI Weather App for Severe Weather Alerts. A strong cold front will push into the Ohio-Pennsylvania zone late Friday night, triggering the storms. The timing of the front will limit instability. “Even though much of the system will pass  very late Friday night and early Saturday, strong storms are still possible,” said Severe Weather Team 11 chief meteorologist Stephen Cropper. "The main impacts will be heavy rain and winds ...

... stay warm, the trees will bud out and sap collection will end, Mr. Bilek said. Once trees bud, the flavor of the sap becomes unpalatable. Mr. Bilek said he has 1,900 taps in 1,400 maples on his farm 20 miles south of Lake Erie, and produces between 500 and 600 gallons of syrup a season. “I’m at about 50 percent of my average syrup production, right now,” said Mr. Bilek, “If we get another month of cold nights, I’ll have a very good year. If we get two or three weeks of cold nights, I’ll have a good year. If we get another week, it will be a short year.”. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Pennsylvania annually produces about 60,000 gallons of syrup a year, with an average crop value of over $1.9 million, ranking from fifth to seventh in the U.
