Nyc Subway Ridership Drops For The First Time Since 2009
Nyc Subway Ridership Drops For The First Time Since 2009

... MTA has seen a steady surge in annual ridership over the past few years but that streak has finally come to an end. For the first time since 2009, the agency saw a decrease in ridership over the last year, leaving agency officials in search of ways to bring the numbers back up, reports AM New York. At a recent MTA board meeting, it was revealed that a total of 1.756 billion subway trips were taken last year, compared to 1.762 billion taken in 2015. While it may not seem like a drastic dip, it amounts to about six million rides and, as AM New York points out, is the equivalent of the one weekday of subway trips for the MTA. With Governor Cuomo planning to cut $65 million from the agency’s budget, it’ll be even more difficult to recover ridership figures. Though a single cause hasn’t been pinpointed, it’s not hard to tell what could be causing the decline. Overcrowded trains and platforms cause delays, which then cause angry passengers who may eventually turn to other ...

... it’s not clear what factors are behind the dip. If commuters are fed up with the inconveniences that come with planned weekend service interruptions, that’s a price the agency is willing to pay to ensure safety, Ferrer said. He couldn’t definitively answer if the rise of ride-hail services played a role in ridership figures. “Could it be Uber? Could it be Lyft? Could it be the fact that we’re working on the system on the weekends and that sometimes causes inconvenience?” he asked. “But in the long term (weekend construction) makes our system safe and reliable. Those are things we take into consideration as well.”. Bus ridership continued to fall in 2016. Transit experts consider the sluggish service to have reached a “crisis” level. Proposals like congestion pricing could reduce traffic and free up space for ...

If conditions reach blizzard levels, as they could on Tuesday afternoon, equipment will be moved to shallower water and anchored to steel supports. The highest level of storm response on the bridge work site is in case of a hurricane, where equipment is moved away from the work site entirely. On the bridge itself, winds need to reach 40 miles per hour, or hit gusts of 45, before a response from the state that would entail reducing speed limits on the bridge. If gusts reach 50 miles per hour buses, trailers and motorcycles could be banned. With gusts at 60 miles per hour, the bridge could be shut down. Right now, forecasts predict winds might reach 40 miles per hour tomorrow afternoon, with gusts up to 50. At Westchester County Airport, six flights have been canceled Monday, primarily to Chicago and only two ...

... policy other than Select Bus Service, the bus trend is very clear…and without capacity changes in addition to (the Second Avenue subway), there is a physical limit to what the subway can do.”. Weekday subway service increased by a marginal.1% last year, but weekend service dropped by 3.1%, evidence that service interruptions for planned weekend work, when ridership is generally low, could be frustrating riders to the point of abandonment. “If we’re going to improve service in a meaningful way, the planned outages are necessary,” said Wynton Habersham, chief of subways at the MTA. Veronica Vanterpool, an MTA board member and executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, said it’s “no secret” that service is worsening, but that “the MTA has to deal with very unique challenge that is accommodating growth while also maintaining a good level of service.”. Experts said it was difficult to outline how or if the proliferation of other transit options, like ride-hail apps or Citi Bike, is pulling some riders away, but a drop in MTA service is not good news. “Without improved subway service, ...

But I don’t fool myself,” his new poster reads. “I just try to stay happy even though I know some stuff, like people tampering with subway ads, is going to slip by.”. The artist, speaking to Gothamist on the condition of anonymity, said the new posters were directly inspired by President Trump’s win in the 2016 election. A group of artists created a political parody of the "See Something, Say Something" campaign signs and replaced them on the MTA subways. “I’m just more sensitive to every ...
