... the life of a Fall River woman. Mar 6, 2017 at 11:03 AM Mar 6, 2017 at 11:06 AM. Deborah Allard Herald News Staff Reporter @debsallard. Having a serious heart condition changed the course of Michaela Gagne Hetzler’s life, but new research proved recently that her disorder was more benign than threatening. Hetzler was diagnosed when she was 17 with Long QT Syndrome, a heart arrhythmia that is activated by physical activity and can cause fainting and even sudden death. She recently learned that her particular mutation of Long QT did not have any deadly symptoms. Some patients with different mutations of the disorder are not quite so lucky. “This is why it’s so important to fund research,” Hetzler said. When Hetzler, a school adjustment counselor at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, and an American Heart Association spokeswoman, first learned she had Long QT in 2000, there wasn’t as much known about the genetic disorder. Doctors knew that some ...

... sudden I look at her and her face was red and flush and I asked Kendal what's wrong. She said 'I'm having one of those episodes,'" Andrea said about the moment she decided to take Kendal to the doctor. Heart Attack: Slashing Door-to-Balloon Times. Doctors at Medical City Dallas said Kendal had ventricular tachycardia, a short circuit inside the heart, explained Dr. Rajeev Joshi, who added that it can be deadly. "A lot of times, when people die suddenly on the field, it is due to malignant ventricular arrhythmia," said Joshi. "This is the type of arrhythmia and the type of heart condition that you see people dropping down on the field and dying or needing defibrillating from," said Andrea. Doctors caught Kendal's ventricular tachycardia just in the nick of time. "By the time we were getting ready for surgery, she wasn't able to get up to go to the bathroom without having these lethal rhythms that people die from daily," said Andrea. But now, a year later, Kendal is back on the field and says she feels better than she has in a long time. Andrea wonders if a routine EKG would have detected Kendal's heart ...

New Cardiac Monitor Is Allowing Doctors To Accurately Diagnose Heart Conditions
New Cardiac Monitor Is Allowing Doctors To Accurately Diagnose Heart Conditions

... to an Irregular Heartbeat. Approximately 14 million people in the U. S. have an irregular heartbeat, also known as an arrhythmia. Heart arrhythmias are very common and are usually harmless. However, certain arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, may produce pooling and clotting of the blood which can damage the brain, lungs and other organs, if not treated appropriately. Early detection of arrhythmia is important to reduce unnecessary medical visits and prevent serious complications, such as heart failure or stroke. In fact, there are three things that people do not realize about arrhythmia, according to a survey sponsored by the National Stroke Association. Less than half of Americans are aware that arrhythmias may increase their risk for stroke. Only 17 percent of Americans are aware that atrial fibrillation increases the risk for stroke by five. Atrial fibrillation is believed to be a common underlying cause of the approximately 30 percent of strokes with no known cause. It’s important to understand the causes and potential warning signs of a stroke. To diagnose an arrhythmia, a physician will typically conduct a physical examination, including ...

For Glenda Marshall, a patient on the trial, the new device is a lighter alternative to the bulky Holter monitor. It only has two stickers and remains invisible under clothing, while the Holter monitor has five wires and hangs around her neck. The Weymouth resident has had heart palpitations for the past seven years, describing it as a horrible feeling like her heart is leaping out of her chest. It happens to her about three times a day, as well as breathlessness, and she has had a Holter monitor assessment in the past. The Types And Risk Factors Of An Arrhythmia

... can lead to a slow heart rate or it can cause you to experience a rising and falling heartbeat. A conduction block describes a scenario where there is a blockage in your heart’s electrical pathways close to the AV node. Risk factors. There are many people who have certain arrhythmias and don’t actually suffer any further complications, but it is not something to leave to chance as you need to know the risk you are facing of developing serious conditions due to your irregular heartbeat. You are at risk of stroke if your heart quivers and it is unable to pump blood efficiently, and inefficient pumping for a prolonged period could ultimately lead to heart failure. If you notice any issue with your heartbeat or feel unexplainably dizzy or sweaty at certain times, these are just some of the reasons to find out whether the problem might be some form of arrhythmia. ... the concept of resting players. Kerr, a disciple of Popovich, is relatively new at this but has learned quickly. Suddenly, it’s an altogether different kind of chess match, one without the usual potency. How close to the vest will they play it. THE SUBS: With so many All-Stars out, substitute starters and reserves will be pivotal. Manu Ginobili, 39, is still going for the Spurs. Ex-Warrior David Lee is having a solid season, and Jonathon Simmons hurt the Warriors on opening night. The Warriors will need unexpected production from veterans (Matt Barnes or David West) as well as the youngsters (Pat Mc Caw, James Michael Mc Adoo, Kevon Looney). THE BIG MEN: Suddenly, veteran big man Pau Gasol is the most prolific scorer for San Antonio. He is capable from both the high and low post. Expect the Warriors to lean on Zaza Pachulia, Ja Vale Mc Gee and West. Gasol will get minutes at center, in which case Mc Gee will have chances to outrun him at both ends. Who is this guy? Curry must fix shot for Warriors to reach desired heights. Now that Klay Thompson is knee-deep into the finer elements ...

OK, so seemingly everyone’s out for the biggest game of the NBA season. Great. But this game still matters, given that the Spurs are now only 1½ games out of first place in the Western Conference, which would guarantee them home-court advantage through the entire playoffs. Even the most Gregg Popovich’d game ever can’t lose those stakes. In three ways, this scenario may actually be more interesting without those stars. 1. The Warriors probably would have run away with it. We get two teams on somewhat even footing (see No. 2) now. ... Minn., reported at a press briefing in advance of her presentation at the American College of Cardiology meeting in Washington, D. C. next week. The arrhythmias were acute in three cases (two paroxysmal, one persistent), with non-sustained atrial tachycardia in two and ventricular arrhythmias in two. Of the six cases diagnosed with heart failure, five had low ejection fraction. The patient with preserved ejection fraction was pregnant and had preeclampsia and moderate-to-severe pericardial effusion. None of the patients had prior known cardiovascular disease or tested positive for other mosquito-borne viruses known to affect the heart, such as Dengue and Chikungunya. Six of the nine were women, and the mean age was 47. "Our recommendation is that if a patient comes to the clinic with Zika, they should have at least an ECG," and ...
