Boston’s Sidewalks Reveal Secret Poems When It Rains
Boston’s Sidewalks Reveal Secret Poems When It Rains

... urban environments; meanwhile, graffiti damages property and is a sign of blight to many. But what if you could leave your mark in invisible ink. A public art project by Mass Poetry , in collaboration with The City of Boston, is doing just that. Launched in honor of National Poetry Month, “Raining Poetry” is a series of poems stenciled throughout the city’s sidewalks. The spray used to write the poems is invisible; when the surrounding pavement is darkened by rain, the dry words emerge and treat pedestrians to the secret poems that quietly wait to be read. The concept for this magic pluvial street art is the brainstorm of Seattle (naturally) resident Peregrine Church. Upon viewing a viral video of superhydrophobic coatings in action – like clothing treated with the water-repellant coating in which red wine would literally roll right off – he had an idea: Rain-activated street art. He began ...

Late Winter Roars In With 1 In 3 Americans Under Weather Watch
Late Winter Roars In With 1 In 3 Americans Under Weather Watch

... forecasters say. Shoppers began tweeting photos of long lines and empty shelves at grocery stores. Just one week before the official start of spring, the weather service issued a blizzard watch for New York City, Long Island, metro New Jersey, northern Connecticut, southern Rhode Island and parts of eastern Massachusetts, including Boston. On Twitter, the storm (dubbed "Stella" by the Weather Channel) generated memes of Marlon Brando despairingly calling for "Stella!" in the classic movie "A Streetcar Named Desire.". Ahead of the storm, bone-chilling temperatures persist across the region. Highs in New York should remain below freezing, forecasters said. "Nearly one in every three people in the US are under a winter weather alert of some sort," CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said. "This all comes after what seemed like it would be the year without a winter.". The blizzard watch extends beyond New York City to Long Island, Southern Westchester, Southern Fairfield, Southern New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties. Washington D. C., Boston and Philadelphia, as well as parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, are under a winter storm watch, ...

... as well. There will likely be a time (in the afternoon/eve) when the Cape and islands get a “mix,” or even light rain.  That would mean more of a wet/heavy snow (sleet mixed in).  For the rest of us, temps are cold and we’re talking “fluff-factor” here. Here are the graphics that coincide with the information you just read.  Of course the 7 Weather Team has you covered from tonight through the storm.  We’ll “weather” it together.  – Breezy. Snowfall Potential. Winter Storm Warning and Winter Storm Watch. Blizzard Watch:  Remember, in order to call this storm a “blizzard,” we do have to reach “blizzard criteria.”  That is, blowing/drifting and/or falling snow coupled with winds of 35 mph, which would reduce visibility to 1/4 or less for 3 consecutive hours or longer.  If there’s growing confidence that this will happen, the NWS will then upgrade this “watch” to a “warning.”. High Wind ...

Major Snowstorm To Slam Boston And Massachusetts

... to the weather service. Statewide, all Tuesday or Wednesday deadlines for municipal elections — including voter registration and nomination papers — were postponed to Thursday, according to Secretary of State William F. Galvin’s office. A special election in Lynn was also postponed. In New Hampshire, however, Governor Chris Sununu told local officials Monday afternoon they will “strongly recommend” that all towns stay open for their scheduled elections, he wrote in a statement, noting that some towns had differing opinions on the matter. Massachusetts officials said Monday that the storm system track had wobbled further west than previously expected. The shift could mean more snow in the central and western parts of the state and less along the South Shore and Cape Cod, officials said. High winds blowing into the coast ...

Potentially Historic March Snowstorm Looming
Potentially Historic March Snowstorm Looming

... above…what month is this. Finally, Sunday afternoon we will only “warm up” into the mid 20 s, again another chance at a record low maximum temperature (current record for Boston is 25 degrees set in 1984). (WBZ-TV Graphic). And if those frigid temperatures aren’t enough to get your attention, the wind sure will be. Wind chill readings will be below zero for most of the day on Saturday and for the first half of the day on Sunday. Yowza. HISTORIC STORM. And then comes that little storm threat next week.  Right now we are focused on the Tuesday through early Wednesday timeframe. This has the potential to be a classic. The storm comes out of the Midwest, redevelops off the Carolina’s and rapidly intensifies (bombogenesis anyone?), and slams New England and perhaps the entire Northeast with blinding snows and powerful winds. Seriously, ...

Dangerous And Historic Blizzard Hits Tuesday

... digging out and coastal flooding. This time around, the coastal flooding will be the least impactful of those highlighted concerns, namely because the worst of the wind is likely to come after the early afternoon high tide Tuesday, limiting flood impact to minor or moderate at vulnerable east and northeast facing coasts. Road travel, on the other hand, is one of our biggest concerns – conditions with snow and wind will make travel disorienting and nearly impossible Tuesday midday through afternoon. Those who must travel should be sure to have a winter driving safety kit of blanket, water, small shovel and charged cell phone. Power outages won’t impact every community, but will occur both inland and at the coast, and those who use medical devices or other vital powered equipment should have generators at the ready. Power outages may last a couple of days for some select communities given the volume of snow, though power restoration from a snowstorm is quicker than from an ice storm, thankfully. ... through late morning and continue into the early evening. (WBZ-TV graphic). Snow will gradually taper in intensity and coverage Tuesday late evening and overnight with just some lingering snow showers Wednesday. In the most intense bands of snow, visibility will be reduced to near zero at times in blowing and drifting snow (blizzard conditions) and travel will be downright treacherous. (WBZ-TV graphic). In fact, road conditions will deteriorate rapidly as the snow moves in and only go downhill from there. A snow day is likely for many schools across the region Tuesday. (WBZ-TV graphic). There will be tweaks and updates to this map over the next couple of days. Why? Because the exact track of the storm will determine where the heaviest snow and banding occurs and whether or not snow mixes with or chances to rain at the coast and on Cape Cod. Currently, a foot of snow seems likely for much of southern New England, with lesser amounts on Cape Cod. The snow will be fluffy inland, but more wet in consistency the closer you get to the coast. (WBZ-TV graphic). Damaging wind gusts will be possible, mainly at the coastline Tuesday afternoon and evening.  The strongest wind will ...

Active Weather Pattern Brings Three Chances For Snow In Upcoming Days

... snowfall will form, likely only a few hundred miles wide, but those who end up underneath this band will receive a quick shot of plowable snow. Initially, most models put the bullseye just to our south…through parts of Pennsylvania across to the Mid Atlantic, just brushing our South Coast with a light accumulation. Now it appears as though this band of snow will push a bit farther north, bringing most if not all of Southern New England into the game. (WBZ-TV Graphic). Time to watch would be Friday morning (about 8 a.m.) through Friday afternoon. Worst-case scenario would be a widespread, plowable snowfall, perhaps something on the order of 3-6 inches. But the exact location of this thin band still remains somewhat uncertain. There is still a decent shot that the heaviest snow will stay to our south and we get nothing more than a dusting to an inch or two south of Boston. Storm 2 – Late Sunday. A fairly potent storm will dive out of the Pacific Northwest early this weekend, dig into the ...

... are possible, and a blizzard watch has been announced for Tuesday night into Tuesday afternoon. The storm—a wintry powerhouse right near the tail end of the season—could also bring winds gusting up to 55 miles per hour. Take this one seriously, says Alan Dunham, NWS meteorologist. “This is really not gonna be a storm you want to mess with,” he says. “Unless you really have to go somewhere, the best advice is to stay off the road. Let the snowplows do their job—the more cars on the roads and highways, it’s just gonna make their jobs a lot harder.”. In a news conference Monday afternoon, Gov. Charlie Baker also urged people to stay off the road if they can and to be aware that the storm is fast-moving and that intense snow and sleet will arrive more quickly than usual. Baker says he does not, however, expect to call for a travel ban. “This is gonna hit hard when it lands, and if people can work from home, that’s great,” he says. “But we don’t think it rises to the level of a travel ban.”. He hasn’t decided whether to tell state employees to stay home tomorrow. Rain is expected south of Boston near the end of the storm, and it could make it ...
