Before I Fall Film Review By Kenji Fujishima
... like Bill Murray's Phil Connors, showing little concern for anyone besides the members of her mean-girl foursome or for anything but the prospect of losing her virginity to the most popular boy in school, Rob (Kian Lawley). Most importantly, she and her posse shower outsiders like long-haired, eccentric Juliet Sykes (Elena Kampouris) with the kind of withering contempt that Phil lavished on Punxsutawney's residents. Before I Fall spouts tired platitudes about the value of altruism and living each day as it if were the last. The similarities between the two films hardly end, though, once Samantha, upon waking up in her bed after she and her friends get into a car accident, realizes the endless loop she's now trapped in. Though Samantha never goes so far as to attempt suicide, as Phil does in Groundhog Day , she does reach a nihilistic point on one particular iteration of her day that leads her to say whatever's on her mind, especially to her friend Lindsay (Halston Sage), who she calls out for her shallowness and narcissism while ...
What If You Had One Day To Change Everything
... – that their choices can have an impact on more than just themselves. The film’s targeted viewership appears to be a younger audience (or just those young at heart). The cast is filled with up-and-coming talents such as Deutch and Sage, as well as You Tube personalities with large – and ever growing – followership like Lawley (also known as superkian 13 ). “Before I Fall” preaches selflessness and generosity while giving the audience a feeling of familiarity, especially for those on the younger side of the spectrum in terms of some of the characters’ struggles with persecution. The film overall is a heartfelt story of self-reflection and humanity, giving viewers the chance to question how they, too are choosing to live their lives. “Before I Fall” is set to open in theaters on March 3 with ...
Before I Fall
... at the same time, like maybe each moment we live has a thousand other moments layered underneath it that look different.”. As each day passes, Sam becomes more acutely aware of the way her and her friends treat other people, particularly a rather unpopular girl in their school, Juliet Sykes. Lindsay despises Juliet and without ever asking why, Sam and her friends hate her too. After all, when your best friend hates someone, you don’t ask questions, you just hate them too. As the novel progresses, Sam begins to ask questions that many of us may have asked ourselves when trying to fit in – is it better to be safe and keep your mouth shut when your friends are doing something wrong or stick up for what you know is right and risk losing them? While Oliver adds in plot elements that satisfy the teeny-boppers still living in all of us — will Sam choose the sweet guy who has been in love with her his whole life, Kent, or continue trying to be with her popular jock boyfriend, Rob? — she adds a new ...

Logan,' 'the Shack' And 'before I Fall
... all but extinct, when a mysterious and dangerous young girl enters their life. The excellent Mangold directed "Logan" as a high-concept Western and likely has created an all-time classic superhero film. See it. I'm expecting an emotionally thrilling Wolverine ending, massive box-office returns and to leave the theater satisfied. Watch the trailer for "Logan". "The Shack" — Sam Worthington, Octavia Spencer, Radha Mitchell, directed by Stuart Hazeldine. After a devastating tragedy involving his child, Mack (Worthington) falls apart at the seams and begins to question his beliefs. When he receives a mysterious letter that beckons him to a cabin (and crime site) to meet God (Spencer), he obliges. An overly sweet lesson in faith follows. "The Shack," which is based on a best-selling Christian novel, boasts Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer but ultimately appears to be a story we've seen many times, repackaged. Skip it. When I anticipate an incoming dud I always hope I'm wrong, but faith-based adaptations are wild cards. "Shack" will prove polished but underwhelming. ...

Ya 'groundhog Day' Heavy On Teen Life Lessons
... page-turners, sci-fi sagas and more. So let's back up a minute. It's "Cupid Day" at Sam's school in the picturesque Pacific Northwest, and she's decided to use the occasion of the night's kegger to give up her virginity to her jock boyfriend Rob (Kian Lawley). As she and her posse – Lindsay (Halston Sage), Ally (Cynthy Wu) and Elody (Medalion Rahimi) – drive to school, they're all excited about the prospect. Russo-Young lets us see the casual cruelty of the girls at school as they bully the nerdy Juliet Sykes (Elena Kampouris) and revel in their own fragile coolness. At the party, thrown at the parents-free home of Kent Mc Fuller (Logan Miller, excellent), who's been crushing on Sam since childhood, the shit and the fan collide. I nsults are hurled, and the girls drive off together in Lindsay's SUV to meet their fate. The rest of the movie is all about teaching life lessons as repetition slowly lets Sam see who she's become. She tries everything to change things: being nicer to Juliet, rejecting Rob in favor of Kent, staying home the night of the party. She even flirts with the dark side. But the cycle continues. In the ...
Before I Fall’ Is Familiar But Finds Its Own Way
... such as the subtle glass-window motif — reflecting the way the protagonist is witnessing her own life while separated from it invisibly — speak to the aspirations of the filmmakers. Its cast, which includes a fully developed lesbian character, is more diverse than formula dictates. Even the moody lighting and slowly warming colors favored by cinematographer Michael Fimognari represent an unusually artistic sensibility for mainstream movies for young adults. “Before I Fall” is about the protagonist’s transformation, so it requires an obstacle — Deutch’s Sam must be objectionable to begin with, to give her somewhere to go. But the film goes perhaps too far in its depiction of her and her Mean Girl friends, making them almost unbelievably awful people (and that goes for the kids around them, who enable this behavior). These shallow bullies ...
