A Heady Blend Of Action, Comedy And Discovery
... “Bridesmaids,” “21 Jump Street” and “Sausage Party” all debuted in Austin. But this year’s lineup includes a medley of marquee action movies. Edgar Wright ’s cars-and-crime picture, “Baby Driver,” starring Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm; David Leitch’s hit man graphic novel adaptation “Atomic Blonde,” starring Charlize Theron; and Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller “Life,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, will all have their world premieres, and Ben Wheatley’s intense shoot-out movie “Free Fire,” starring Brie Larson and Armie Hammer , has its U. S premiere. Comedy is present, to be sure — James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist,” a look at the making of the modern cult movie “The Room,” will be shown as a work in progress — but it’s definitely a shift, a nod to the universal conundrum film ...
Not Such A Mad Man! Jon Hamm Debonair At Sxsw Premiere Of Baby Driver
... shirt and black dress, while Elgort went for a wine purple suit with a grey button-up and matching tie. Wright, who's also directed films such as The World's End and Shaun of the Dead, wore a dark blue suit with a black collared shirt. Supporting players: Gonzalez and Elgort were dressed to the nines for the big event. Say cheese: Hamm flashed his Colgate smile while posing with movie's director Wright. The crime-thriller features an ensemble cast including Oscar-winners Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey, Cinderella beauty Lily James and The Wolf of Wall Street star Jon Bernthal. The highly-anticipated movie casts Elgort as a hot-shot getaway driver who winds up in more trouble than he could have imagined when a job goes awry. Spacey plays a mafia don, while Hamm portrays a stockbroker-turned-professional criminal in the movie. Baby Driver hits ...
Putting The Pedal To The Metal
... at SXSW, puts Ansel Elgort in the driver’s seat as Baby, a wheelman who depends on a constant soundtrack to get him into gear. It’s been portrayed as a change of pace for Wright, who made his reputation lovingly pastiching genre tropes in his famous Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End). However, Wright sees it as in many ways the same song as his earlier work, just in a very different key. Last month, he Instagrammed the script’s front page, containing one vital sentence: “Every scene in this film is driven by music.” Every film he’s made so far, he said, “has a scene connected to music, and I wanted to take that aspect, [and] make an entire film about it.”. He’s been tinkering with the idea since 1994. That’s five years before his breakout success with subversive British sitcom Spaced, when “Bellbottoms” by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion earwormed its way into his skull. The 19-year-old Wright kept it on constant repeat, “and I kept visualizing this car chase, and thinking, ‘This would be a great car chase song.’” His 2002 heist-themed music video for Mint Royale’s “Blue Song” was arguably a proof-of-concept, so much so that when it ...
Baby Driver Will Be Music To Edgar Wright Fans’s Ears
... grace through any sequence that requires him to dance, drum, or lip-sync along to his playlist. But Baby Driver suffers a bit from Wright’s historic preference for style over character. When an actor like Simon Pegg is at the center of a Wright film, his affable charm and mile-a-minute delivery gives audiences plenty to latch on and root for. (Even in The World’s End, where he plays the heel.) But for all his suave song-and-dance man delivery, Elgort isn’t quite endowed with the same charisma. And the withdrawn, laconic nature of Baby, a hero who lives inside his head and a musical world of his own, means that while Baby Driver is never boring, it struggles to ever leave a deeper impression. But since Wright has never been one for complicated plot or deep character beats, fans of his previous work may be grateful just to be along for the ride. As Wright himself has admitted, Quentin Tarantino is an influence in the film, which is apparent in the film’s stylized violence and character nicknames. Baby Diver is also such a curious blend of heightened comical world ...
