Low-cost Norwegian Air Boosts Presence In U.s. Northeast
... is promising to boost traffic at smaller airports on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean when it starts service to Europe this summer from Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. Norwegian Air announced Thursday that it is opening new flight crew bases and plans to hire pilots and flight attendants at T. F. Green Airport in Providence, R. I., and Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N. Y., about 60 miles north of New York City. Year-round flights from those airports to Edinburgh, Scotland, begin in June, and to four airports in Ireland and Northern Ireland in July. There also will be flights to Edinburgh from Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport, near Hartford. One-way flights bound for Europe started at $65 for the first 10,000 seats and were already selling out Thursday morning. Once the introductory phase is over, flights will start at $99. Some Europe-bound flights were on sale for more than $300 on the airline’s website Thursday. The company won permission from the Obama administration in December for its disputed plan to expand flights to the United States. Several large U. S. airlines and their labor unions ...

... six Boeing 737 MAXs this year and another nine 787-9 Dreamliners. He’s already announced two more U. S. crew bases to add to the existing bases in New York and Fort Lauderdale and says more announcements are coming soon. The big U. S. airlines and pilot unions have accused Norwegian of unfair competition through paying lower wages, including the use of lower-paid Thai flight crews. He hotly denies that, saying his American crews are paid U. S. wages and that his Bangkok-based flight crews do not fly to the U. S. but only between Thailand and Europe. “This political nonsense is just trying to limit access to low fares,” he said. Intense political opposition from the U. S. airlines and unions held back Norwegian’s first DOT permit — the one for its Irish subsidiary — for three years before it was granted. In January, the same interests began lobbying the new Trump administration to claw back what Obama had given. But that hasn’t happened yet, and Kjos is optimistic that Trump won’t do so. “We’ll have almost 1,000 crew members in the U. S. by the end of this year. We are flying millions of European tourists into the U. S. We are creating a lot of jobs. And we fly Boeing ...
Trump Meets With Pilot Unions On Permit For Norwegian Air
... Pilots' Association, want the new administration to withdraw the permit, arguing it gives Norwegian Air an unfair advantage against domestic ones. "The Trump administration's willingness to discuss this matter is a critical step in the right direction for aviation and pilot labor," Net Jets President Pedro Leroux said. "The move is consistent with President Trump 's pro-American worker narrative, and we are heartened by his interest in this issue – one that we view as posing a definitive threat to the future of the aviation industry.". The unions held a rally at the White House last month to urge the new administration to withdraw the permit. They, and several others in the airline industry, charge that it allows the Norwegian company to work through an Irish subsidiary, taking advantage of the Emerald Isle's lighter ...

... and the region. “We think in the first six months, we will get to 400,000 passengers here at Stewart and hundreds of thousands more as a result of Norwegian service,” he said. “. I think is a very exciting possibility.”. One-way flights bound for Europe started at $65 for the first 10,000 seats and already were selling out Thursday morning. Once the introductory phase is over, flights will start at $99. The Federal Aviation Administration last week gave Norwegian permission to operate flights in and out of Stewart, as well as the Connecticut and Rhode Island airports. The airline plans to base tow Boeing 737-800 jets at Stewart. Norwegian won permission from the Obama administration in December for its disputed plan to expand flights to the United States. Several large U. S. airlines and their labor unions opposed the expansion, arguing it would threaten U. S. jobs. They have accused Norwegian of getting around Norway’s labor and tax laws by operating new flights with a subsidiary based in Ireland called Norwegian Air International. The U. S. Transportation Department approved a ...

An Airbus A 320 aircraft, left, and an Airbus A 321, right, stand on the tarmac at Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France. European airlines Air France-KLM and Norwegian have propelled into the New Year with above expectation results; however headwinds from rising fuel prices, cost-cutting and government policy threaten a bumpy ride ahead. Air France-KLM's's chief financial officer Frederic Gagey told CNBC Thursday that geopolitical factors have ensured that the airline must remain "extremely strict" in its cost reduction strategy in 2017, including cutting approximately 1,800 jobs across the group. The Franco-Dutch carrier saw revenues of 24.8 billion euro ($26.4 billion) for the full-year 2016, fuelled partly by a dip in oil prices last year. Operating income rose to 1.04 billion ($1.1 billion) ...
Us Airport Stewart Likely Norwegian Air Destination
... in Ireland and the US,” said a Norwegian spokesman. Tickets for the Ireland-US flights are expected to go on sale shortly. Some could be priced as low as €59, although the bulk are likely to cost more than this. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns Stewart, which is about 60 miles from Manhattan. This week it emerged that the airport intends renewing an incentive scheme designed to support new domestic and international flights. The scheme offers discounts and credits over two years. It had been due to expire on March 31 st but could be extended for another three years, which would safely allow Norwegian to qualify should it launch flights from there this year. Hartford, Connecticut was another airport said to be on Norwegian’s radar. Aer Lingus already flies there, but the Irish carrier is more focused on attracting travellers who want to travel on to Europe via its hub at Dublin. Norwegian Air International is an Irish-registered subsidiary of Norwegian Air Shuttle, which wants to use the company to launch low-cost long-haul flights from Europe to the US and Asia. Its application for a US ...
Norwegian Air International To Open Transatlantic Routes
... that delayed this in the first place did not go away. US pilots met president Donald Trump this week to voice their concerns at Norwegian’s entry to the market. Only a very brave person would predict how the US president is likely to react. His administration has made some positive remarks about Norwegian’s plans, particularly in highlighting that the airline was buying lots of US-made Boeing aircraft for its fleet. Additionally, the airports with which Norwegian has been talking, along with the businesses and politicians in their respective districts, seem to be happy to welcome it. Presumably they are not beyond doing some lobbying of their own. Assuming that the flights go ahead, it would then be a question of whether there is a viable business flying between Cork, Shannon and Belfast and the US east coast. Watching how that, and Norwegian’s plans to offer low-cost long-haul travel between ...

Norwegian Air Shuttle Is Making Waves
... I’ve flown a lot and can say that at 35,000 feet you really don’t need plated meals with silverware and associated accoutrements better suited to a restaurant. It’s superfluous and you pay for it — but Premium tickets on Norwegian don’t seem to cost that much more than regular economy transatlantic tickets on the legacy carriers and, truly, you get all you need and more. More from the Norwegian catalog of cool: Complimentary Wi Fi aboard the 737-800 fleet, an in-flight magazine worth keeping and cordial cabin staff who sport spiffy uniforms by Moods of Norway. The food, service and cleanliness made the whole experience of flying on Norwegian nice and refreshing. Norwegian is giving travelers plenty of ways to cultivate their own relationship with the airline. One of the best things about ...
