... self-exploration on a picturesque road trip across Mexico. The movie follows two sexually excited teenagers (Bernal as Julio and Diego Luna as his friend, Tenoch) and their fateful encounter with the older Luisa (Maribel Verdu). The plot is punctuated by a voiceover about racial and economic disparities that afflicts the country. Mexico is a character and the context. It is going through the motions with these eager teenagers, and getting older and wiser with each new bump in the road. Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001). Growing up in a politically volatile country to politically active actor parents, Bernal was aware of and involved with the world around him. His concern with the social and political situation and history of Latin America is evident in his work. With Walter Salles’s The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), Bernal acquainted himself with the continent beyond Mexico and explored the depth of his craft. Based on the diaries of Che Guevara, the movie sees Bernal portraying the confusion, disappointment and anger of one of the most iconic images of rebellion in the world. In an interview with ...
Celebs Unleashed On Hollywood's Big Night
... Development.”. Later, when Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won for The Salesman, the award was accepted on his behalf by Anousheh Ansari, famed for being the first female space tourist. Ansari read a blistering letter from Farhadi , who declared last month he would not attend the Oscars in the wake of Trump’s executive order blocking citizens from Iran and six other predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U. S. (The ban has since been halted by judicial decisions.). “I’m sorry I’m not with you tonight,” Farhadi said via the letter. “My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and from the other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law which bans immigrants entry into the U. S.” Ansari was interrupted by cheers here, then continued: “Dividing the ...

President Trump's effort to ban immigrants from some Muslim countries took its first big hit at the Oscars Sunday when an Iranian filmmaker who stayed home in protest won the award for best foreign film, The Salesman. Asghar Farhadi sent a representative, engineer and astronaut Anousheh Ansari, to accept the award for him and to read a statement apologizing for not being there. Farhadi chose not to travel to the U. S. for the ceremony to protest a pending Trump order forbidding any Syrian refugees and a temporary ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran. "My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U. S.," his statement read, to big applause. It was the first strong, serious objection to Donald Trump declared at the Oscars so far, and it clearly was shared by most of the audience. ...
You’re Killing Me Susana’ Dulls Gael García Bernal’s Charms
... differently. In what even HBO’s Girls covered with more tact, the film is about an actor whose significant other runs off across the world to an Iowa writing workshop. The actor, a soap opera supporter named Eligio (Gael García Bernal), is Me and his wife, a teacher, is Susana (Verónica Echegui). Eligio has a woman on the side and enjoys drinking til the wee hours of the morning, but sees nothing wrong with his marriage until one day when Susana simply disappears. What follows is a blur of toxic relationships, misjudged cringe comedy, and plot developments that plod circles in the Iowa snow. Eligio asks friends and family, none of whom know of Susana’s whereabouts, and attempts to file a police report. It’s clear that the film wants us to believe that he’s simply too narcissistic to believe his wife up and left him over his constant intoxication and affairs, but it’s reinforced over the course of the film that he’s likely just very stupid. After an uninteresting, overlong investigation of ...
Love Story Of A Troubled Married Couple
... the trials and tribulations of being in love tend to gravitate toward one of the principle parties. This structure creates a situation where one of the pair is saintly while the other is a sinner. In "You're Killing Me Susana," the screenplay by Luis Camara based on the novel by Jose Agustin doesn't take such a definitive stand. There are moments when each side of the romantic equation deserves sympathy and other times when they earn disdain. The way the film flawlessly slips between these emotional tent poles is what makes it so compelling to watch. At the heart of the story are Eligio (played by Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal ), and his wife Susana (Veronica Echegui). Both are involved with the arts: He's a soap opera actor in Mexico City and she's a promising writer. MOST READ ENTERTAINMENT NEWS THIS HOUR. ...

A Messy Marriage In Gael Garcia Bernal's 'you're Killing Me Susana
... he’s going to do once he finds her, other than bring her home. RELATED: Get out to see 'Get Out:' It's fearless, funny and scary | Promising 'American Fable' doesn't quite deliver | 'Bitter Harvest:' Good heart, mediocre film. Of course, that's not as easy as it sounds. Susana — who now goes by Susie, to Eligio's disgust — loves her life on campus. She also has hooked up with a bearish Polish writer (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson) who says little but stands around with an artsy, smoldering look on his face. Will she leave the poet? Does she even want to go back to Eligio. A car ride becomes painful In "You're Killing Me Susana" for Susana (Verónica Echegui) and Eligio (Gael Garcia Bernal). (Photo: La Banda Films). The movie, written by Luis Cámara and director Roberto Sneider from a book by José Agustín, unfolds in a way that feels messy — not in a cinematic sense, but in the complex way life does. Eligio and Susana fight, have sex and sort-of get back together. After all, they both love each other, so he simply sticks around while she writes and attends classes. But the couple's ...
Bernal Shines As Philandering Actor
... Bernal. Bernal’s Eligio is a charming rogue who earns his keep in the less elevated echelons of showbiz in Mexico City, and has no scruples about two-timing his wife (Verónica Echegui, who makes quite a fetching couple with Bernal), the Susana of the film’s title and an aspiring writer. When Eligio wakes up one day to find that she’s left without a word, we quickly learn that he has a less affable side (though it never takes over completely). It’s the old double standard — this macho guy can dish it out but can’t take it. Eligio eventually figures out that she’s taken off for Iowa, of all places, to attend a writing workshop at a fictitious university. He heads north, where his more playful side gets him into immediate (although modest) trouble with customs. This signals that we’re in for some fish-out-of-water, culture-clash humor, and writer-director Roberto Sneider serves up plenty of it. More from Walter Addiego. A world-famous poet is hunted in ‘Neruda’. Eligio is aghast to find that his wife is hitting the sack with another workshop participant, a large, taciturn Polish poet. She eventually accepts her husband’s unasked-for presence — allowing him to crash in ...
Jimmy Kimmel, Gael Garcia Bernal, Asghar Farhadi, Barry Jenkins Mark Their Protest Against Donald Trump
... Naderi, a former NASA director, and an Iranian, stood beside Ansari as she read Farhadi's words. "Dividing the world into `us' and `enemies' categories creates fear," Ansari continued in Farhadi's statement, which concluded with a passionate defense of the power of film to create empathy "between us and others, an empathy that we need today.". Let's stand united. Dwayne 'Rock' Johnson joked that the only thing that would unite the country in these "politically charged times" is his singing. Then there was Barry Jenkins who spoke up more subversively while accepting his award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight. "All you people out there who feel like there's no mirror out there, that your life is not reflected, the Academy has your back, the ACLU (American Civil Liberties' Union) has your back, we have your back. For the next four years, we will not let you down.". Arts are important. Justin Paul, who co-wrote the award-winning City of Stars, spoke up for public schools, an issue that has come under severe scrutiny after Trump-nominated Betsy De Vos was confirmed as the Secretary of Education. Gael García Bernal Hits the Midwest in Cross-Culture Comedy 'You're Killing Me Susana'. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. Print Article. Roberto Sneider's You're Killing Me Susana (Me estás matando Susana) is a culture-clash comedy in which the clash happens both onscreen and off. Eligio (Gael García Bernal) is a self-absorbed telenovela character actor in Mexico City who thinks nothing of carousing and cheating on his novelist wife Susana (Verónica Echegui), and yet is surprised and angry to wake up one morning to find she's left him. He tracks her down at a writing seminar at a university in Iowa, where he ingratiates himself into her life Benjamin Braddock–style, though Susana is a bit more accepting of his return than Elaine was. Sneider's film has curious structural echoes of one of the best fish-out-of-water stories of recent years, 2015's Kumiko, ...
