Gowanus Canal Superfund Cleanup Will Move Forward Regardless Of Trump
... no matter who's in the White House, an official with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency assured worried locals at a meeting Tuesday night. Hours after news broke that President Donald Trump had ordered EPA employees to stop communicating with the media , and a day after Trump put a freeze on EPA grants and contracts , Gowanus residents gathered for a regularly scheduled monthly meeting where federal EPA officials give updates on the $506 million Superfund cleanup of the contaminated canal. EPA's community involvement coordinator, Natalie Loney, wasted no time addressing "the elephant in the room," as she called it. "We are going to move forward with the cleanup," Loney said, noting that the cleanup plan for the canal had been written into law and couldn't be renegotiated. "The Superfund law was written so it wouldn’t be buffeted by the sways of political changes within the administration," Loney said. As for fears that Congress could slow ...
Monsanto, Epa Seek To Keep Talks Secret On Glyphosate Cancer Review
... influence within the EPA's OPP, and was close with Mr. Rowland. The documentary evidence strongly suggests that Mr. Rowland's primary goal was to serve the interests of Monsanto.". The EPA is a taxpayer-funded, public agency and its dealings with Monsanto should be subject to public scrutiny, particularly given the widespread use of glyphosate herbicide products and the ongoing international debate over the safety of the chemical, they claim. "The health and safety of millions of U. S. citizens is at stake," states a Jan. 16 plaintiffs' filing. "Decisions affecting the public health should not be based on secret conversations between Monsanto and EPA officials. If Monsanto wants to advocate on behalf of glyphosate to EPA employees, they should have to do it publicly, so that concerned citizens have equal opportunity to advocate for their health and the health of their families. This issue is too important to allow Monsanto to improperly influence the EPA, and then hide such communication behind an improper 'confidential' designation.". Monsanto is adamant that its documents not be made public, arguing that releasing them would be "premature and ...
Nominee To Lead Epa Testifies He'll Enforce Environmental Laws
... wrote articles in peer-reviewed journals believe that human activity is the fundamental reason we are seeing climate change," Sanders said. "Do you disagree with that?". The comments came near the same time that NOAA and NASA scientists announced that 2016 was the hottest year on record , the third consecutive year of record-breaking heat. Sam Adams, the U. S. director of the World Resources Institute, later said the timing of Pruitt's testimony, after the heat report, was noteworthy. "We cannot afford to have an EPA administrator who fails to grasp the urgency of addressing climate change," he said in a statement. Pruitt did say that he believes the EPA administrator has "a very important role to perform in regulating CO 2," and that there is a legal obligation to do so. Senate Democrats also pushed ...
As The Planet Warms, Trump's Epa Director Hedges
... Congress delegated this power.) California has generally used this power to push for a more efficient and less polluting fleet of vehicles. And in the nearly 50 years since the Clean Air Act passed, the EPA administrator has denied their waiver only once—in 2008, during the Bush administration, when Stephen L. Johnson said that California could not regulate cars to limit greenhouse gases. (The next year, Obama’s EPA granted the waiver.). In his hearing, Pruitt said that he could not guarantee California would continue to receive its waiver, because the EPA has to review each request individually. Failing to grant the waiver would undercut some of the state’s climate-change policies, which are the most expansive and aggressive in the country. It was a moment that shows just how frustrating Pruitt could prove to be for the environmentally inclined. Like many EPA administrators before him, he will always be able to champion statutes while pleading innocence when regulatory processes support his political ends. Of course, if Pruitt denies the waiver, it’s ...
Epa Accuses Fiat Chrysler Of Installing Emissions-cheating Software
... the nature of these devices, it said the software results in increased emissions of nitrogen oxides. "The software is designed such that during the emissions tests, Fiat Chrysler's diesel cars meet the standards that protect clean air," EPA Assistant Administrator Cynthia Giles told reporters on a conference call. "However, under some other kinds of operating conditions, including many that occur frequently during normal driving, the software directs the emissions control system to operate differently, resulting in emissions that can be much higher.". That includes times when vehicles are "driving at high speeds and for an extended period," Giles added. The software was found in two models, according to the EPA: "light-duty model year 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks with 3.0 liter diesel engines sold in the United States." The regulator said it has not yet made a certification decision for model year 2017. Article continues after sponsorship. The EPA ...

... EPA grant freeze could ‘pull rug out. More Headlines. Man on trial for deadly shooting says. MADISON, Wis. - The Trump administration has placed a temporary suspension on all new Environmental Protection Agency business, which bars staff from awarding new grants and contract. The move impacts five grants previously awarded to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. One of those grants was being used to grow human tissue outside the body that can be used as a screening tool to identify new drugs and to determine if compounds in the environment might be toxic to human tissue. “I think it is very important because right now, when we try to understand the effect of environmental toxins on human tissue, we are using rodents or we are using other animal models and often, the effects on animals are very different than the effects on humans,” said ...
Actually, We Know What The Country Looks Like Without The Epa
... urban decay in the big cities, and plagued by seemingly unstoppable air, noise, and water pollution,” C. Jerry Simmons, an archivist and historian at the National Archives in Washington, wrote in 2009. “The project takes rightful credit for the United States’ first serious examination of its rapidly decaying natural environment.”. The EPA tasked each of its photographers with documenting a specific environmental problem in certain areas, from noise pollution in Boston to health impacts on coal miners in West Virginia. More than 15,000 images from the Documerica series were published online in 2009. Simmons wrote then that many of the ills shown in the photos continued to plague the country. “When we look at images of today’s environment, we can see that what troubles the environment in the new millennium is what troubled it in the early 1970 s, and DOCUMERICA confirms it. Thousands of images of pollution, strip mining, crowded cities, and land abuse could well be photographs taken in recent times. Though a great deal has been done over the past 30 years to correct problems depicted in the ...
