By Amber Phillips By Amber Phillips January 27 Follow byamberphillips. Sen. John Mc Cain has repeatedly come under attack from GOP nominee Donald Trump. Here are just a few of their rocky moments. (Peter Stevenson/The Washington Post). After Sen. John Mc Cain (R-Ariz.) won his primary, it took him precisely one day to ditch Donald Trump. Mc Cain campaigned for reelection on the premise that Hillary Clinton would win and that he could be a check on the White House. Trump's win does not seem to have changed Mc Cain's plan all that much. A week into the new administration, Mc Cain has opposed him on enough issues to equate to nearly a criticism a day of the new president's proposals, including on free trade, torture and his budget priorities. Mc Cain can't stop Trump on his own — but he can sure make the president's path to success on Capitol Hill a lot bumpier. The Republican Party's 2008 presidential nominee is now one of the Senate's most senior members. He chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, which ...
John Mccain Scorches Trump Omb Pick For Defense Spending Cuts, Government Shutdown
... cuts in contradiction of Trump’s promises to protect the programs. Responding to Stabenow, Mulvaney even stood by past comments comparing Social Security to a Ponzi scheme. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), also on the budget committee, got Mulvaney to all but admit that Trump’s inauguration crowd was smaller than Obama’s 2009 crowd. His comments were not enough, however, to reassure Sen. Claire Mc Caskill (D-Mo.), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, who demanded to know whether Mulvaney would resign rather than lie at Trump’s behest. And Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), a budget committee member, got Mulvaney to concede that he does not consider climate change a major danger to society. Mulvaney even caught grief for the recent revelation that he owed ...
Trump Defends Immigration Ban In Fiery Statement, Says Gop Senators Opposing Are 'looking To Start World War Iii
... from Trump's advisers, who criticized the Brooklyn judge who issued the stay, emphasized the "temporary" aspect of the order, and offered " apologies for nothing here.". Leaders around the world came out against the action. German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Trump that the global fight against terrorism was no excuse for banning people from Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. Here's the full statement from Trump on the executive order. "America is a proud nation of immigrants and we will continue to show compassion to those fleeing oppression, but we will do so while protecting our own citizens and border. America has always been the land of the free and home of the brave. We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say. My policy is similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries ...
John Mccain Says Trump's Decision To Withdraw From Tpp Harmful To U.s
... move on Monday, Mr. Trump signed a presidential memorandum that withdrew the U. S. from TPP. On Mr. Trump’s desire for better relations with Russia, Mc Cain said that the U. S. must still stand up to its government. “All of that is fine, but it has to be done from a position of strength,” Mc Cain said. “It cannot acknowledge and legitimize Russian behavior” such as the taking or Crimea and partitioning of Georgia. Mc Cain added that the U. S. must stand against Russia in Syria where he said its warplanes are using precision weapons to strike hospitals in Aleppo, killing thousands of people. Asked to explain his decision to support Mr. Trump’s secretary of state nominee, Rex Tillerson, Mc Cain said, “I still have some concerns, but I’m willing to give Mr. Tillerson a full opportunity to act as our secretary of state in what I would argue is the most challenging times in 70 ...
I'm Prepared To Codify Russian Sanctions Into Law
... for that. That would be a tremendous asset. If we can, that would be a positive, not a negative.”. Mc Cain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, is one of many lawmakers in both parties uneasy about Trump appearing soft on Putin (which may have something to do with wealthy Russians investing in his real estate ventures for decades). Moments after Trump’s press conference, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) issued a statement saying he is “deeply concerned” that Trump may be planning to lift sanctions. “I would encourage the president to reject this course of action,” said Portman, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “To lift the sanctions on Russia for any reason other than a change in the behavior that led to those sanctions in the first place would send a dangerous message to a world already questioning the value of American leadership and the credibility of our commitments after eight years of Obama administration policies.”. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, ...
Conservative Group To Target Mccain Over Mulvaney Grilling
... Trump has picked to be director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, over his votes to cut defense spending during Mulvaney’s confirmation hearing earlier this week. Story Continued Below. The Arizona Republican has since said he’s leaning against voting to confirm Mulvaney, a South Carolina Republican and tea party darling who has tangled with congressional defense hawks in the past over his desire to shrink all federal spending — including the Pentagon’s budget. The Freedom Works online ad buy, set to be announced in a news release Friday afternoon, will run nationally but specifically target Arizona, the group said. It’s the latest episode in a long-running feud in the Republican party between defense hawks and fiscal hard-liners — and a further development in an escalating battle between Trump and Mc Cain, who has emerged as one of the new president’s fiercest GOP critics. “Sen. Mc Cain’s opposition to President Trump’s pick is another action that shows he stands against responsible federal spending levels,” ...
John Mccain Says Us Has No Strategy To Deal With Russian Cyber Warfare
... 70 years,” said MCain, who chairs the Senate armed services committee. “There are pressures on the new world order that was established in 1947 and 1948, the likes of which we have never seen.”. He told attendees he believed “President Trump will probably be tested by one or more of these forces around the world, whether it be North Koreans, Iranians, the Chinese or the Russians” and expressed his hope that all of his colleagues “will support a response which is proportionate and will also tell Vladimir Putin , the ayatollahs and the Chinese that there is a new team in town”. ... any National Security Council in history. Remember Karl Rove, when he sat in on one, and Axelrod, when he was supposed - look, that is - and the role of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been diminished, I understand, with this reorganization. One person who is indispensable would be the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in my view. So, it’s of concern, this - quote - “reorganization.”. DICKERSON: All right, Senator Mc Cain, we’re going to have to leave it there. Thanks so much. MCCAIN: Thank you. DICKERSON: And we will be back in a minute. (COMMERCIAL BREAK). DICKERSON: We turn now to Democratic Representative Keith Ellison, who joins us from Minneapolis. Congressman, the president’s defenders would say that, after the Iranian hostage crisis, Jimmy Carter asked Iranian students to report to immigration offices. During the ...
Us Faces More Cybersecurity Threats, Says John Mccain
... and increasing. U. S. officials and lawmakers have argued that because there is no official policy on cyberwarfare, the response to any attack can be slow, politicized and ultimately ineffectual. The U. S. took two months, after publicly accusing Russian government hackers of trying to influence the presidential election, to respond with economic sanctions and other more symbolic measures. The reality is that the "nature of conflict has moved to the information space instead of just the physical kinetic space, and it now operates at greater scale and quicker speed," said Sean Kanuck, who served as the first U. S. national intelligence officer for cyber issues in the Office of the Director for National Intelligence. Under the Obama administration, the U. S. proposed international cyber rules for peacetime, including that countries should not target another's critical infrastructure. But otherwise, it has maintained existing international laws and reserved the right to respond ...
Mccain, Graham Lead In Gop Criticism Of Trump Ban, Many Others Stay Mum
... than originally perceived. Throughout the day Saturday, several senior GOP officials were still attempting to get firm answers on what precisely the exemption and waiver process would be for those programs. Still, a reality several pointed to, separately: Trump is doing what voters elected him to do. "It's not like this was a secret during the campaign," one Senate aide said. "He ran on it. He won.". Reflecting the muted reaction, Sen. Todd Young, R-Indiana, said in a statement: "The federal government has no more important responsibility than protecting the American people, and refugees from any country should only be permitted to enter the United States if we are certain they do not represent a threat to our citizens.". "I am eager to ensure that the administration's new policy allows Iraqis and Afghanis who faithfully supported our troops and who face threats to their safety - and who do not represent a terrorist threat - to come to the United States," Young said. And at least one member offered praise -House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin ...
