... do if it rains. Hayden said ‘Just ask Texas.’”. Ten months earlier, Fry’s Hawkeyes smashed Texas on a rainy Anaheim night in the Freedom Bowl, 55-17. Musburger would stay in Cedar Rapids on the nights before they worked games in Iowa City. In 1991, he mentioned a Cedar Rapids restaurant/bar called the Sip-N-Stir during a telecast of an Iowa game, insisting it had “the best pizza we’ve ever had.”. A week later, bar owner George Haddy said “Since that game we’ve had calls from all over the country … California, New York, Virginia … no kidding.”. Musburger remembered that nine years later when I bumped into him in Atlanta as he was in line to get his press credential for that year’s Super Bowl. “It was this little hole in the wall, but it was great,” he said. “I gave them a pop on the air and the owner was so surprised. He said he knew Harry Caray liked to give plugs on the air, but he didn’t know Brent Musburger did.”. Musburger went on to talk about his recollections of his times at Kinnick, saying “The first thing that stands out in my mind is the number of good games we had with the Hawkeyes. They were very dramatic games. “It always rained in Iowa City. It was dark and ...

Brent Musburger Retirement Decision Came Before Joe Mixon Comments, Espn Says

... that Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. faceoff for the NHL All-Star Game at Staples Center would appear on its network affiliates (KNBC-Channel 4 in L. A.) for the first time since 2004, and not relegated to its NBCSN cable outlet, it’s likely most fans wouldn’t have noticed. But since it’s out there … why? Is this a new strategy going forward? Is it taking advantage of no NFL football to compete with (outside the unwatchable Pro Bowl). “This is a very special year because of the (league’s) Centennial and the Top 100 players (announcement), and Gary Bettman and the league asked us if we’d consider putting it on NBC, and as good partners, we have,” explained Sam Flood, the network’s executive producer. “The long‑term decision will be made down the road, but we think it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase the game to the broader broadcast network of NBC. “But long‑term we’ll have to see where we end up. We think it’s spectacular that this is happening, and we wanted to honor the ...

Brent Musburger Retiring From Sportscasting At Age 77

... month had nothing to do with his exit. Musburger said he hoped Mixon, who had been suspended for a year after punching a woman and breaking her jaw, would make the most of his second chance and did not initially talk about his victim. A former sportswriter, Musburger’s broadcast fame took off through his work on “NFL Today,” the pro football pregame show. He broadcast the NBA, college basketball, the Masters and tennis — most of CBS’ marquee events. He was behind the mic for one of college football’s most memorable plays, Doug Flutie’s “Hail Mary” pass that beat Miami for Boston College in 1984. He confessed to Flutie later that it took him awhile to identify Gerard Phelan, Flutie’s roommate, as the receiver for that pass — and Flutie told him he didn’t know, either, until he had run off the field. Musburger was abruptly dropped by CBS in 1990 in what was perceived as a salary dump, then came to work for ABC and ESPN. “Brent made every event feel larger,” said Stephanie Druley, ESPN senior vice president for events and studio production. “To me, there is probably not a greater storyteller as a play-by-play person. He can spin a yarn like nobody ...

... of the play. And in an era when play-by-play announcers get criticized for too much excitement or not enough, his reactions were usually close to perfect. At 77 years old, the time is right for Musburger to retire. In recent years, more than his great calls, he's made a few egregious (and thanks to the internet, viral) mistakes, including ogling of A. J. Mc Carron's then-girlfriend Katherine Webb on the air in 2013 and, more recently, mishandling how he spoke about Oklahoma's Joe Mixon , who punched a female student in 2014. While the announcement that he's leaving may be bittersweet, as USA TODAY Sports' Christine Brennan wrote last week, it's the right one to make. It is time for him to go. You Are Looking Live!' Brent Musburger's Nfl Legacy Is Hosting The Greatest Pregame Show Ever

... they all have some roots in “The NFL Today.”  CBS’ simple show made the pregame show an event. NBC tried to compete with “The NFL Today,” though it was Mr. Pibb to CBS’ Dr. Pepper. ESPN started a pregame show and now it’s an all-morning event. Fox has tried to recreate “The NFL Today” formula for years with outlandish personalities. CBS has done the same with its reboot of “The NFL Today.” Many of those shows are done well, but there is only one original “The NFL Today.”. In the 1970 s and 1980 s, when the NFL’s popularity was skyrocketing, CBS’ pregame show was almost as big of a deal as the games that followed. In the days before the Internet and ESPN’s “NFL Prime Time,” Musburger also emceed our first look at the highlights from around the league in the halftime and postgame studio show. [ Ditch the paper and pen – play Squares Pick’em for the Big Game! ]. Musburger was fired from CBS in 1990, and rarely showed up in any NFL coverage after that. Even though it has been almost 30 years since Musburger was taking us from stadium to stadium to start our NFL Sunday, fans of a certain age still will get involuntarily excited when they see the ...
