... a PR guru enjoying the fruits of success and the freedom that singlehood affords. But when Ben (Stephen Schneider, “You’re the Worst,” “Broad City”), a divorced father of three, crosses her path seeking help with his social media page, she falls hard. And that sets off alarm bells in the commitment-phobic Alice and summons forth her imaginary friend from childhood, Mary. Mary, who resembles something of a cross between the Pillsbury Dough Boy and a mogwai from the movie “Gremlins,” would surface in times of crisis to talk Alice through whatever predicament she happened to be in. And now that the possibility of a long-term relationship has entered the picture, Alice needs Mary more than ever. “She’s my inner voice and my mentor,” explained Elfman in a quiet corner of a Pasadena, Calif., hotel. “Mary kind of mirrors what’s going on with my character. So when Alice is a little tipsy, Mary is tipsy. And when Alice is enjoying her melted mint chocolate chip ice cream, Mary is enjoying the mint chocolate chip ice cream. So she’s mirroring her and challenging her at the same time, much like our own thought process.”. Playing opposite the CGI ...

... how it was different. I literally had no reference except during rehearsal.”. Dratch’s job was a little easier, she says. “I would record seeing the scenes already shot. I would see the puppet thing, and so I didn’t have to match it exactly, but I felt like I was acting with Jenna, because I had the advantage of seeing her on the screen right there. So they’d play her line right before I said mine, so I felt like I had this sort of fake give-and-take with the actors that were already up there. And just like in any voice-over, you try different ways. You find, ‘Oh, this needs to be more of a serious moment,’ or, ‘You can really go wild here.’ So I had that luxury that you might not have if you’re just on set and you have to get things done. So I have the freedom to go crazy.”. The whole idea for the series came from animator Patrick Osborne whose animated short, “Feast,” earned an Academy ...

... who usually has really bad advice. The audience is introduced to Alice as a lonely girl with a neglectful upbringing, who, with the help of her imaginary friend, Mary, (developed with crayon, on paper, at the age of 6) manages to become a reasonably functional adult. But when she starts dating a divorced dad (Stephen Schneider), her anxieties go into overdrive — not because of him, but because of his three school-age kids. Alice’s fears around parenting appear to stem from her take on her own parents, but it’s otherwise not totally clear why meeting Ben’s kids would send her into a panic spiral. Especially as Mary’s contributions to Alice’s problems are… questionable, at best. Dratch, who does her best to make Mary winsome, still cannot cross the gulf of acting required when the primary relationship in a show is between a human and a work of Photoshop. This is especially jarring because ABC has become so skilled at constructing believable, unconventional families around different ...

Jenna Elfman Talks About Her Imaginary Childhood Friend In Charming New Series

... surprise of meeting the kids seems to trigger an upheaval in Alice, as suddenly Mary, her imaginary friend from childhood (a fuzzy little CGI creation voiced by former SNL-er Rachel Dratch), reappears to help her navigate rough patches in her life. Acting with a character who wasn’t really there must have been similar to having an imaginary friend for Elfman. But reporters at a recent press conference for the show wondered if she actually did have a made-up pal as a kid. “I didn’t have one,” she offered, “but if I did, I think I would want it to be Tim Conway and Harvey Korman. I think that would be really awesome to have them as little imaginary friends, because you’d just be snort-laughing all the time.”. It may seem challenging to act with a character that isn’t there, but Elfman says some of the show’s filming techniques helped. “We had rehearsal with a stuffed, life-size puppet,” she said, “and we had an amazing puppeteer, so we would rehearse with her. And we had a comedic actress on set to do all the lines, so I felt like I had a comedic partner, because Rachel is in New York. And then we would film one take with the ...

... and her husband, Ben Falcone, are the executive producers — and TV Land wanted to be in business with Mc Carthy. As for the show itself, well, "Nobodies" (11 p.m., TV Land) is OK. Some of it is quite funny. And some of it really isn't. Comedians Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras play versions of themselves. They're trying to sell a movie script, titled "Mr. First Lady," which they accomplish by claiming that Mc Carthy has agreed to star in it. She hasn't. Which she tells them herself, because Mc Carthy and Falcon (who also directs) both appear in the pilot. TOP JOBS. There's a whole lot of really painful comedy — painful for the characters, that is, who endure disaster after disaster, embarrassment after embarrassment in this send-8 p of the Hollywood entertainment business. Again, some of it's funny, and some of it isn't. And, not surprisingly, there are celebrity cameos, because, well, Melissa Mc Carthy. The pilot features appearances by Jason Bateman, Jim Rash and Maya Rudolph, and there are more to come in upcoming episodes. TV Land has already ordered a second ...
