Watching Spacex Make History At Pad 39a
Watching Spacex Make History At Pad 39a

... 9 rocket, Space X invited members of the media to view the rocket on the pad. Credit: Amy __link__. The historic site saw the launch of most of the Apollo moon missions as well as many space shuttle flights, including missions to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. Sunday's launch marked a new era for Pad 39 A, which Space X hopes will one day ferry astronauts to Mars and beyond. The road to Mars began nearly five decades ago as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins strapped into their seats aboard the Apollo capsule, which sat atop the world's most powerful rocket at the time — the Saturn V. That vehicle, as well as many others that followed, was assembled in NASA's iconic Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) before it was rolled out to the launchpad atop a massive crawler transporter. From my spot on the roof of that same building, I prepared to watch Space X make history by launching the first commercial rocket ...

On Second Attempt, Spacex Launches Rocket At Nasa's Historic Pad
On Second Attempt, Spacex Launches Rocket At Nasa's Historic Pad

... Sunday on its second launch attempt at NASA's Launch Complex 39 A , at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The first attempt, scrubbed Saturday with just 13 seconds before liftoff, was foiled by concerns over an anomaly discovered in the rocket's steering system. The issue was "99% likely to be fine," Elon Musk, founder of the private space company, tweeted Saturday , "but that 1% chance isn't worth rolling the dice. Better to wait a day.". Btw, 99% likely to be fine (closed loop TVC wd overcome error), but that 1% chance isn't worth rolling the dice. Better to wait a day. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 18, 2017. On Sunday, however, the launch went smoothly. Not only did Space X's Falcon 9 rocket lift off without a hitch, its first stage also returned to land right back on a platform on Earth. Shortly afterward, the Dragon spacecraft it was carrying detached as planned from the rocket. While there's nothing particularly rare about the 5,500 pounds of cargo strapped into that spacecraft — which is destined for the International Space Station — the pad it took off from has quite a backstory: Launch Complex 39 A was the site that sent ...

Spacex Mission Highlights ‘golden Age’ Of Space Science Research

... the devastating Sept. 1 explosion took place. (Credit: Space X). By Sandy Mazza , Daily Breeze. # Comments. Pioneering Hawthorne rocket maker Space X will be the first commercial company to lift off from the historic Florida launchpad built for the Apollo moon mission if today’s morning’s launch goes off as scheduled. The largely research-based trip for NASA to the International Space Station’s national laboratory will depart from Launch Complex 39-A at Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center. The trip is important for Space X, but also for the greater Los Angeles region and global scientific studies. The 23-story-tall, two-stage Falcon 9 rocket was built at Space X’s Hawthorne headquarters, along with the payload-carrying Dragon spacecraft on its nose. The Dragon carries tons of food, supplies and research materials, including 15 different Department of Defense studies. One of those will allow scientists to better understand how certain species regrow damaged limbs so the same can be done for humans. A Lightning Imaging Sensor on board ...

An Inside Look At The Differences Between Life At Nasa And Spacex
An Inside Look At The Differences Between Life At Nasa And Spacex

... time at both companies — details a number of fascinating differences between life at NASA and Space X. Not surprisingly, the fact that NASA is a government agency, as opposed to a private company like Space X, impacts the work environment in both positive and negative ways. While Lavoie points out that the work-life balance at NASA is a positive, the work there can sometimes be encumbered by “an institutional aversion to risk” and predictably slow-moving bureaucracy. Projects can start with much fanfare and then be cancelled. Repeatedly. Maybe this is because there are many worthy things that should be studied but funds are always limited. It can be rewarding because you have more opportunity to really dig in and understand things and learn. Your job is very secure, even when budgets get cut or you yourself don’t succeed. As for life at Space X, the work environment there, not surprisingly sounds awfully similar to a forward-thinking start-up, albeit on steroids. In contrast, Space X is a product company. It designs, builds, sells and launches rockets. Your job there is to make that happen no matter what. Nobody ...

Spacex Aborts Launch To The Iss Seconds Before Liftoff, But Might Try Again Tomorrow

... … but that 1% chance isn’t worth rolling the dice.” He hopes to make the next launch window for CRS-10, Sunday, February 18, at 9:38 am EST. Space X is back, and it’s launching your tax dollars into low Earth orbit. Saturday morning will mark the private rocket company’s tenth mission to the International Space Station—and its second launch attempt since a Falcon 9 rocket blew up on a launchpad last September. Saturday’s launch will lift off from Cape Canaveral’s launchpad 39 A, the same slab of concrete used for the Apollo missions. That’s a neat bit of ourobouros, especially since a congressional investigation just finished looking at Space X’s potential to ferry humans to the ISS. The report, released on Thursday, detailed concerns over some cracked turbine fuel pumps—an old issue, already being fixed. But that’s not likely to soothe anyone with lingering concerns that this company is struggling to overcome technical difficulties. In the short term, the only real indication will come on Saturday, when the Falcon 9 leaves behind either a swirl of smoke or a smoldering heap of metal. Late last summer, Space X had been riding high on its back to back (to back ...

Spacex Could Beat Nasa Back To The Moon
Spacex Could Beat Nasa Back To The Moon

... Is it understood? Has it been mitigated sufficiently?". If Space X can address those issues, it will be on track to launch a moon mission on the 50 th anniversary of Apollo 8, NASA's first mission to orbit the moon. That could certainly serve to spur other commercial spaceflight companies, and NASA, into action. Hubbard pointed to when he held a workshop with The Planetary Society that said astronauts could orbit Mars by 2033 , and not long after Lockheed Martin came out with a Mars Base Camp plan for 2028 and Space X came out with their Red Dragon Mars mission now scheduled for 2020. This moon announcement "sets a bold new goal," Hubbard said. "There are people that are out there moving the goalposts with some significant technical credibility behind them, and this goal of two paying ...
