Paul Ryan's Voicemail Is Always Full

... Bob Casey. I repeat: I've heard from Casey. I've been calling and emailing and writing him regularly. I've had acknowledgments of five of my emails. I've been sent information regarding his positions on the nominations of Tom Price and Rex Tillerson for cabinet posts. Regarding U. S. Sen. Pat Toomey, I've had four acknowledgement emails and one letter that I regard as a "treasure." In it he writes, "Objective qualifications should matter more than ideology in the confirmation process." Now, that's interesting because as far as I call tell he's backed every one of President Donald Trump's nominees. He definitely has an alternate version of objective qualifications than mine. I'm certainly looking forward to getting in on one of the Tuesday with Toomey  events. Regarding my representative - U. S. Rep. Lou Barletta, all the way up there in Hazelton, I've had at least two acknowledgement emails. But he is the one person over time that I've heard least from excepting his "newsletters.". Regarding phone calls, I've not been contacted by any of them though they require phone numbers for their calls and addresses and phone numbers for ...

Paul Ryan Downplays Divisions Over Health Plan
Paul Ryan Downplays Divisions Over Health Plan

... funding Mr. Trump ’s border wall. Democrats are refusing to help Republicans kill their signature health law, so GOP leaders can’t afford to lose more than 22 of their House members or three votes in the Senate, where they hold 52-seat majority. Asked how many members would likely oppose the current plan, Mr. Meadows said: “A lot more than 22.”. Mr. Meadows and Rep. Mark Walker, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, another influential conservative caucus, balked at an early draft of the GOP bill. Meanwhile three Senate Republicans — Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky — said Tuesday the party should be focused on repealing Obamacare, rather than getting bogged down in the replacement. “This is what we won elections over in 2010, 2014 and 2016,” Mr. Paul said. House leaders said the party would come around as they fine-tuned the plan in the coming weeks and received feedback from the Congressional Budget Office on how their plans would affect coverage, federal spending and deficits. “When we get everything done and right we’re ...

How Paul Ryan Is Getting Trump's Team Ready For Battles In Congress
How Paul Ryan Is Getting Trump's Team Ready For Battles In Congress

... since his inauguration , when he spoke of "American carnage" and big changes coming to Washington. He will deliver his premiere address to a joint session of Congress - a scene that captures all the pomp of presidential power. The goals he'll outline are clear. Obamacare. Taxes. Cutting back on an array of Obama-era regulations. Confirm a Supreme Court nominee. They are as complicated as they are ambitious - each on its own capable of strangling an entire legislative agenda. Ryan's listening sessions are central to making it all happen. For a White House that is mostly letting Congress lead the way, it's an opportunity to loop in top officials who, in large part, have never before served in government - or even watched a subcommittee mark up. "They've been very smart in trying to get everyone on the same page," Marc Short, Trump's director of legislative affairs, told me. "There's a lot to do this year in a ...

Donald Trump And Paul Ryan’s Phony War
Donald Trump And Paul Ryan’s Phony War

... traits. An axiom of conservative movement thought, coined by Rick Perlstein, holds that conservatism never fails, it is only failed. Republican domestic policy has collapsed time and again over the last quarter-century: under George H. W. Bush, Newt’s Republican revolution, and Dubya. Conservatives have gained control over the party, but never figured out a way to reconcile the gap between their preference for low taxes on the rich and low social-insurance spending and a public that demands the opposite. The tensions are evident again already: Obamacare repeal and tax cuts are both floundering because the party can’t agree on allocating the middle-class sacrifices (throwing people off their insurance, taxing employer-provided health-care plans, a border-adjustment fee) required to make the numbers add up. Trump’s very real indecisiveness and ignorance of the policy substance has made it much harder for Congress to unify. But the main reason these policies are floundering ...

Conservatives Rebel On Health Care, And Gop Looks To Trump

... display. The two leading conservative groups in the House both announced their opposition to House leadership health care plans based on a leaked draft and reports that the bill would cost more than expected while covering fewer people than the Affordable Care Act. And three key conservative senators, Mike Lee of Utah, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas, added their voices in opposition, too, announcing that they will resist "Obamacare Lite" and "accept nothing less than full repeal of Obamacare.". Amid the high-profile defections, Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell of Kentucky summoned Republicans to a meeting Wednesday afternoon to hash things out. (Julie Pace). Health care is far from the only issue dividing Republicans. Plans to overhaul the tax code have them tied in knots, and senior lawmakers are busy throwing cold water on Trump's budget proposal, which was made public in broad outlines on Monday. The budget envisions a huge $54 billion surge in U. S. military spending while slashing domestic programs and foreign aid. GOP Rep. Mike Simpson of Idaho, ...

... and methods of our intelligence community so you don’t compromise how we collect and gather intelligence while we get answers to these questions,” Mr. Ryan said. “The point is we need to get answers. We need to make sure that nothing happened that shouldn’t have happened as we go forward,” he said. Rep. Devin Nunes, California Republican and chairman of the House intelligence committee, said Monday he’s seen no evidence that Trump campaign officials had any contact with Russian officials during last year’s campaign, which would contradict recent reports. Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat and the ranking member on the committee, countered that it’s still too early in the investigation to know whether there’s been any collusion. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Monday that Democrats have put Sen. Richard Burr, North Carolina Republican and chairman of the Senate ...

... defund Planned Parenthood and said she believes women’s health will suffer if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. Hawkins said it was a health screening through Planned Parenthood that helped detect her ovarian cancer, and “without them I wouldn’t have become a mother.”. Ryan “makes it sound like (Planned Parenthood) funding only goes to abortions. But it doesn’t. It goes toward preventative and diagnostic care like cancer screenings,” said Hawkins. Ryan spokesman Ash Lee Strong said Ryan favors community health centers over Planned Parenthood clinics. “Our goal is making sure women get the kind of care they need, and we believe that can best be achieved by putting money into community health centers, which provide similar services as Planned Parenthood but vastly outnumber them,” Strong said in an email. Bill O’Connor, a retired business owner from Lake Geneva, said he does not want Ryan to push for privatizing Social Security or move to a voucher system for Medicare. “I am afraid for our country. I’m amazed at how quickly we’ve gone from a president with such great integrity to a man who doesn’t understand how government works and ...
