During the past few months, it seemed pretty obvious that Casey Affleck was going to win the Oscar for best actor for his role as a broken man in “Manchester by the Sea.” But more recently, Denzel Washington seemed to be picking up steam thanks to a Screen Actors Guild Award for “Fences.”. It was Affleck who prevailed. “Dammit,” he said when he took the stage, as he got choked up. He first thanked his rival for the prize. “One of the first people who taught me how to act was Denzel Washington, and I just met him tonight,” Affleck said. “I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say,” he said at the end of his speech. “I’m just dumbfounded that I’m included.”.
