Macy’s Decision Signals More Than Closing Two Stores
... chains often talk of serving the needs of people when they open new stores. There was no mention of that in the decision to close Brockton and the two-story Macy’s at the Galleria that was an anchor for the Taunton shopping center. It is ironic that the shopping malls that led to the demise of tens of thousands of small stores in town squares and city neighborhoods are themselves now being cannibalized in a new era by a new technology. There are people who still remember the opening of the original Shopper’s World in Framingham as a harbinger of a brave new shopping experience. Now many communities greet news of a major retail development with resistance because of traffic, pollution, land use and other concerns. And mention that a shopping mall may be closing and it brings out people arguing against building more apartments, condos or houses, although Massachusetts desperately need more housing in which ...

Police Arrest Man In South Shore Plaza Shooting
... and Campos went to the mall Saturday to buy a gift for an upcoming baby shower. In a Macy’s doorway, Valencia said she was on her way to South Shore Plaza to shop Friday night but at the last minute chose not to go. “For some reason, I just decided not to,” Valencia said, her eyebrows raised. She was unnerved after learning of the shooting and said she is grateful that she didn’t end up shopping Friday night. “It’s scary because we come here all the time,” Valencia said. Kalpita Rane, 30, smiled as she held the door for another patron after 11 a.m. “Think it’s safe?” the Braintree resident quipped. Rane said her friend sent a text message to her shortly after 7 p.m. Friday. Her friend was shopping at American Eagle and heard the gunfire. The friend’s message read. “ ‘Don’t come to the mall,’ ” Rane said. Rane said her friend first suspected the shooting was carried out by terrorists. Locals Shaken Up After Shooting, Lock Down At South Shore Plaza
... ramifications, obviously, people want to feel safe in the town. This doesn’t define Braintree, but this incident defined how well Braintree and its partners respond.”. Braintree resident Annmarie Mc Dermott was shopping with her 14-year-old daughter Kelly at Target at the the time of the shooting. “People were rushing to the door and the Target employees locked everything and said ‘nobody is leaving,’” she said. The pair sheltered in place for about an hour and a half before being told to exit through the Cheesecake Factory. “There were swat teams with big guns watching us walk out, there were people in military uniforms with cameras and flashlights,” Mc Dermott said. “It was crazy, it was like a movie with tons and tons of police from all over.”. Mc Dermott said she was more than happy with how the incident was handled, a sentiment echoed by Sullivan. “It’s at a time like this that you’re tested,” the mayor said. “What I witnessed first hand was that the work by the Braintree Police Department was extraordinary. Abington Will Replace Fixtures That Caused Lead, Copper In School Water
... ABINGTON - The school district will replace water fixtures at two elementary schools in town that showed elevated levels of lead and copper in their water, elements that can cause serious health problems in children. Water fixtures at Beaver Brook Elementary School and Woodsdale Elementary School produced water with elevated levels of lead and copper, according to results from testing conducted this fall by the state departments of Public Health and Environmental Protection. Abington Superintendent Peter Schafer said the fixtures that produced contaminated water have been shut off, and will be replaced or filtered and re-tested before they are turned back on. Abington was one of 179 school districts to participate in a voluntary state water testing program in October, but Schafer said the district conducts this testing every year. "Probably because of what happened in Flint, Michigan, with lead in the water, the state decided to put money into this testing," Schafer said. "I think Flint raised awareness of this.". The October ...
South Braintree Square Owners Stay The Course
... said, adding that the trend mirrors patterns being seen by national retailers. Sachetti recalled this past Christmas as the first one in memory without bad traffic by South Shore Plaza, but said Barry's Flower Shop will remain a brick and mortar location. "We're prepping for Valentine's Day so don't forget the love of your life," Sachetti said, adding that the business had a strong Christmas season in 2016. Alex Kostas, owner of Charlie's Shoe Service, said his business in the square has been slower this winter. "Business is not so good, but it's alright," Kostas said. "Summertime is more busy.". Kostas said when he began cobbling in Braintree he had six competitors in town, but now he is the last one standing. Charlie's Shoe Service has been bringing in new customers and credits his good prices with maintaining a cash flow, though he said the business is also expensive to run. He also said he wouldn't be able to afford South Braintree Square if he ...
A 14-year-old Charged With Murder
... him. Ruth wanted Raeshawn to have a mentor, someone he could confide in. She wanted her grandson to excel and to have a peaceful life. In 2007, shortly after Rodney was released from a stint in jail, he was kicked out of the apartment he had been sharing with Retha. He moved in with Ruth and Raeshawn, then filed for custody of his 6-year-old son, saying he planned to move out on his own and take the boy with him. The court battle went on for two years, and, before it was over, Rodney was back in jail, this time for breaking into a home. By then, Retha had been sober for two years, had a three-bedroom apartment and a job, and wanted to raise her son. She asked the court for custody. Though uneasy, Ruth thought it might be time. The judge agreed. “Are you sure you’re ready for him?” Ruth remembers asking her former daughter-in-law. “This is a big responsibility and this is his life.”. “I’m doing good,” Retha told her. In August 2009, Raeshawn, then 8, moved in with his mother. But her Boston ...
Plymouth County Sheriff To Join Immigration Screening Program
... Interfaith Community in Plymouth County, said immigrant advocates are expected to protest the move Wednesday at a news conference planned by Mc Donald and Hodgson to announce their agreements with ICE. "Sheriff Mc Donald needs to focus more on what his office is supposed to be doing, which is providing better re-entry programs for people leaving the county jail," Lopez said. Mc Donald said he sees the program as a way to help immigration officials identify people who are priorities for deportation. "It will allow those individuals working inside the correction facility when they encounter someone who identifies themselves as foreign born, they can check that against the (ICE) database and see if this person is a priority for ICE for deportation proceedings," Mc Donald said. Under the ICE program, sheriff's department staff members go through four weeks of training to be certified as ICE officers in jails. "This is not carte blanche to detain individuals for the duration of their immigration cases," said Sarah Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for ICE. "This allows local jails to detain someone if they meet immigration enforcement priorities until ICE can come ...
