On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Let's Resolve To Renew Our Common Humanity

... ally. All of us evolve in different ways, and societies change, even if progress can't come soon enough for many. We must continue striving for a better America, and be prepared to accept that the change we wish to see might not come in our lifetimes, or in ways different than what we predict. King knew that, and as he pushed for equality for all, he evolved in ways he likely never saw coming. Nelson Mandela transformed from a militant to a pacifist, and after more than two decades in solitary confinement, became a symbol of reconciliation. Before he became the Mahatma and the global paragon of ahimsa, or non-violence, Mohandas Gandhi was a lawyer with an affinity for well-tailored clothes. These icons evolved on many issues until their deaths, and in that vein, we should move forward with open eyes, ears, minds, and hearts. Following the election, many commentators have noted the return of the "Archie Bunker" American, the angry white male voter who is suspicious of and angry at change. But one thing many people forget about the fictional TV character is the way he evolved over the years All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place aired, ...

... largely in the museum’s Zachos Contemporary Gallery. After gazing into the darkened mirror of Iago’s Desdemona, Townsend, the docent, led a half-dozen participants over to And One. The photograph, created by Hank Willis Thomas in 2011, depicts two black men jumping up to dunk a basketball. To the left of the image, a noose hangs down. The Currier just acquired the work this year. Townsend contrasted the two elements of identity that the image represented. The “love and even worship” that comes with being a sports star, and then the history of being black in America. “Utter violence,” Townsend said. “There are (recorded) lynchings in every state in America.”. “It’s okay to be horrified by it,” he said. Mc Intyre said the Currier hopes to create a space to have tough conversations about challenging topics, such as racism. “We have to kind of see where our audience wants to take it,” she said. “We’re trying to open them up and not always have them be safe.”. Docents usually take the temperature of their tour participants to guide the conversation. Townsend did this at the beginning of his tour when ...

... before march on downtown old slave market. In foreground are African Americans just released from jail arrested for demonstrations last week. (AP Photo). ARTICLE PHOTO GALLERY (7). December 1955, Holt Street Baptist Church, Montgomery, Ala. That day, a courageous community activist, Rosa Parks, had been forced off a city bus and jailed. That night, a hurt, angry crowd of people gathered at Holt Street to discuss the situation. Speakers noted that what happened that day was simply the way things were done in Montgomery. Racial segregation and white supremacy controlled every aspect of Alabama life. What could anybody do with a man like Big Jim Folsom in charge of the state? Face facts, prominent clergy and laity said as they shook their heads, clenched their fists and lamented. TOP JOBS. Then someone turned to the new young preacher in town, fresh from a great run at Morehouse and Boston University, and asked him to say a word. ...

... from fear. I’ve heard so many people talk about how they’re genuinely frightened,” Federated Church Rev. Dr. John A. Terry said. “They’re frightened because they’re Muslims, they’re frightened because they’re women, they’re frightened because they’re Jews, they’re frightened because they’re gay.”. - Mashpee Baptist Church Choir singing "Oh, Freedom". When asked by Rev. Terry, about a dozen attendees said they will participate in Boston’s Women’s March on Saturday, the day after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Six others stood up to say they were attending Saturday’s Women’s March in Washington, DC. Others spoke of the civil rights movement more generally. “God’s grace has transformed us from picking cotton to the U. S. presidency,” said James W. Miller, reading one of his poems to the congregation. Four Hyannis West Elementary third-graders read poems they wrote ...

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Provides A Time To Reflect
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Provides A Time To Reflect

... of Wilkinsburg. By Michael A. Fuoco / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair…. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was born of pain and suffering. Yet its remarkable optimism provided much needed solace, hope and inspiration to blacks and others disenfranchised more than half a century ago and remains relevant today. That’s why in Wilkinsburg, as elsewhere across the nation today, a prayer vigil for peace for “all faiths, all races, all ages” will be held at the Wilkinsburg Train Station at noon, sponsored by the Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project for Peace. For Pastor Janet Hellner-Burris of the Christian Church of Wilkinsburg, coordinator of the sanctuary project, the dream lives on even in a nation some refer to as the Divided States of America. “Dr. King is one of the reasons I’m doing the work I’ve been called to do in the community,” she said. ...
