An Open Letter To Chiefs Fans
An Open Letter To Chiefs Fans

... ya. One of my favorite things about sports is that, on occasion, we the fans have an opportunity to actually affect what happens on the field. False starts. Delay of games. Miscommunications. Worst. Day. Ever. This is the fans’ tangible impact on the game. Passion. Emotion. A sense of invincibility. This is the fans’ intangible impact on the game. Think about that. You take 106 of the most athletically gifted human beings in the world and square them off in the world’s most complicated sport. And then you got me: currently typing this in my underwear after waking up at noon today, with Cheez-it crumbs littered all over myself, and I can impact the game. What a time to be alive. Quite literally…. The Kansas City Chiefs play their most important home game in 13 years on Sunday, with the opportunity to advance further than they’ve been in 23 years. I love this year’s team. I do. I fucking love them. It’s easily my favorite team since the Vermeil days with Priest Holmes and Will Shields and Jason Dunn, the team I grew up on and adored. But guess what? They never got as far as this team can on Sunday. Think ...

Playoff Loss Ends Chiefs' Season On A Sour Note
Playoff Loss Ends Chiefs' Season On A Sour Note

... , who had a down season. Can the Chiefs find a way to keep Berry? The veteran safety had one of his best NFL seasons. He ignited a fourth-quarter comeback in November against the Panthers with an interception and a spectacular return for a touchdown that included two spin moves on his way to the end zone. He was again a key figure in a win against the Falcons in December with his two interception returns. He is also their leader in the locker room. Everyone listens when Berry, a cancer survivor, speaks. He was the player who got in cornerback Marcus Peters' face on the sideline with some clear advice after Peters inexplicably punted the ball into the stands and picked up a penalty after a fourth-quarter fumble recovery against the Panthers. The Chiefs could make Berry the franchise player again, as he was in 2016. It’s going to cost them more than the $10.8 million it did last ...

... Focus. But after picking off a league-high eight passes and defensing a league-high 26, Peters’ targets plummeted by nearly half to 87 this season. According to NFL Research, Peters faced seven of the league’s top 10 receivers this season — based on receiving yards — and did not allow a touchdown to any of them. That includes Antonio Brown, whose Pittsburgh Steelers will face the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton considers Peters’ recent lack of targets the ultimate sign of respect for an upper-echelon cornerback. “You make a mistake, it’s off a little bit, he’s probably going to pick the ball off,” Sutton said. “He’s a guy that can take the ball from you, so if they can get the same route and not have to risk that element, then they might work the other side.”. NFL cites safety reasons for changing kickoff time of Sunday’s Chiefs playoff game. All of which might lead some to wonder: With the stakes at their highest Sunday, would the Chiefs consider letting Peters pull a Sanders or Darrelle Revis on Sunday ...

... the setting on her Twitter account to private this week. She didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment from The Star. Her father also did not respond to calls for comment. Hill received a deferred sentence and three years’ probation and was ordered to complete anger-management classes and a year-long batterer’s intervention program. According to the prosecutor , Hill’s victim was consulted about and agreed with the terms of the guilty plea. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has said, “I’m probably more proud of him for what he’s doing off the field as on the field,” adding that Hill has not caused any trouble since his arrival in Kansas City. But is that enough for Chiefs fans and others in the community. “I do believe in recovery, and I do believe that there is a time that we can say, ‘OK, we’ll let it go,’” said Joan Schultz, the executive director for the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Lawrence who considers herself an avid Chiefs fan. “But I do think part of that recovery is to talk publicly about what this has meant to him personally and what it means to the victim. If we just ...

... hit by Snow. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain’s obsession with Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” was unstoppable. The whole team loved Phil Collins’ ominous “In the Air Tonight.”. When Keys took the Chiefs job, he switched his style to match football’s faster pace and younger demographic. “There’s more of a contemporary feel with football,” he says. “You play a little bit more hip-hop.”. At Royals games, Keys plays power songs as players walk up to the plate. “I can’t do that on offense in football because then our quarterback can’t hear,” he says. When the home team is on defense, he plays loud, fast rock music to get the crowd and the Chiefs amped up. “We want everybody screaming and drowning out (the other team’s) quarterback,” Keys says. Music drives the whole mood of the game, says Brad Young, the Chiefs’ senior producer of game and event entertainment. “It’s one of the most important things when it comes to watching a TV show, a movie — anything,” Young says. “Just imagine watching ‘Game of Thrones,’ but instead of ‘Game of Thrones’ music you put on Bruno Mars. Bruno is great, but that completely ...

... key because it meant the Chiefs had home-field advantage should they end up facing John Elway and the Broncos. Elvis Grbac was 7-2 that season as a starter before being hurt, but Rich Gannon went 6-1 in his place and fans wanted Gannon to stay the starter. However, Gbrac played the final regular-season game, then got the start against the Broncos. Grbac seemed poised to lead a late comeback from four points down in the playoff game after driving the Chiefs from their own 36 to the Denver 28. But Grbac’s final pass intended for Lake Dawson in the end zone was incomplete. Lin Elliot game. Jan. 7, 1996: Colts 10, Chiefs 7. On a bitterly cold day at Arrowhead Stadium, fans saw a 13-3 season and No. 1 seed come to a bitter end. It started promisingly as Steve Bono and Dawson connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. But that was all the scoring for the Chiefs as kicker Lin Elliott missed three field goals, including a 42-yard attempt late in the game, and his name is mud among Chiefs fans. But the thing is … Bono threw three interceptions and the Chiefs lost a fumble. Colts quarterback Jim Harbaugh threw for just 112 yards with a touchdown in the second ...

The Simpatico Behind The Chiefs’ Four-year Rise From The Rubble To Success

... good players, and that would be true. Or, you could argue the Chiefs have good players now because of that change in morale, and that would also be true. Two springs ago, the Chiefs were in desperate need of a cornerback. Washington had a talented prospect, but the kid was a bit, well, rough. He screamed at coaches, and teammates. Was a regular with personal fouls. Even got kicked off the team his last year. Chris Ballard, the Chiefs’ director of player personnel, flew to the prospect’s hometown. He spent a few days there. Talked with everyone he could find, including some who wouldn’t be biased toward the positive. Ballard liked what he heard. Reid knew some of the prospect’s college coaches. Together, they led the push to draft Marcus Peters, and the point isn’t who gets the credit — it’s that nobody was taking the credit. Dorsey is the one who tells the story of Ballard’s work, and he always leaves out any influence he had on the process. Ballard recently declined to interview for San Francisco’s GM job to stay in ...

... said. “He’s starting on an NFL team, and at the same time he’s having an incredible year,” Schmidt, who is in the Detroit Tigers organization, said of Berry. “We don’t need any pity parties,” he said. “We don’t need anything like that.”. Conner, an Erie native, announced he was cancer-free in May and started for the Panthers in September. Previously, he worried that his health history could scare off National Football League teams, a concern that has been assuaged by Berry’s success. Last month, he declared his intention to enter the NFL draft in April. “They're putting a lot of money into these kids, so I’m very sure they're skeptical, worried, what have you,” Conner’s mother, Kelly Patterson, said. “To see it happen to someone else, it gave him a lot of hope that he can get picked up and get through it.”. After texting with Berry and talking to him on the phone, Conner finally met him during an appearance on “The Ellen De Generes Show”  in April. Berry’s ...
