... March 19 - Banda El Recodo | Siggno. March 20 - Florida Georgia Line. March 21 - ZZ Top. Photos: 2017 entertainers for Rodeo Houston. Focused on growth and diversity, this year's lineup features the most non-country acts since 2012 with seven. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo President Joel Cowley says there’s a strategy that goes into scheduling the acts. “We’re very pleased with what we’ve put together,” said Cowley. “We try to strike a balance. Most of our season ticket holders are interested in country music; but, when you put an act in where someone wants that ticket from them, they’re happy as well.”. Since 2008, the show averages 5.5 non-country performances per year and they usually pack NRG Stadium. “And when you have an opportunity to bring in a Meghan Trainor or a Fifth Harmony, that’s hard to pass up,” said Cowley. ... and Rodeo will award more than $14.2 million in scholarships in 2017, increasing its previously announced commitment by 5 percent and bringing the full 2017 educational commitment to more than $26 million. As college tuition costs continue to rise, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will increase all $18,000 four-year college scholarships to $20,000 awards, beginning with the 2017 scholarships. “With the hard work of our volunteers and staff, combined with the support of the Houston community, we are extremely excited about our ongoing support of education and the youth of Texas,” said Jack Lyons, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo chairman of the board. For the 2017-18 school year, the Houston show has committed to presenting more than 750 college scholarships, supporting 60-plus educational programs through grants, awarding numerous graduate assistantships, and providing awards and premiums to junior livestock show exhibitors and calf scramble participants. The 2017 Houston Music Forecast
... October, at neighbors’ urging, Turner told the White Oak developers they would not receive a new temporary permit for the outdoor stage. They obtained a permanent permit in October, but not before being red-tagged by the Public Works department after inspectors were tipped off that crews had begun construction on the stage before the permit was in hand. Then, in mid-December, a group of neighbors filed a lawsuit against the music hall’s owners, W 2 Development Partners, arguing that the noise from concerts and large crowds interferes with their property rights. Though the stage had already gone silent for the winter, a judge nevertheless temporarily banned the venue from hosting any outdoor events with amplified sound. That restraining order lasted two weeks before it expired. In 2017, there is no doubt that White Oak Music Hall intends to hold concerts on the lawn; managing partner Johnny So confirmed as much when the Houston Press reached him for comment last week. He and the other partners have repeatedly insisted they’ve worked with the city to ensure everything is done by the book, and that residents’ concerns have been taken into ...
