Porcello Gets Win, Kimbrel Records Save As Sox Beat Pirates 5-3

... from an opening day win. End 7 th, 5-3 Red Sox: With Felipe Rivero in the game for Pittsburgh, the Red Sox couldn’t add to the lead. Sandy Leon did send a line drive single into center, but Pedroia struck out looking, Benintendi flew out to left, and Betts grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning. Robby Scott is entering the game for Boston. Middle 7 th, 5-3 Red Sox: Barnes gave up a line-drive single to center field by Mercer to start his outing, cutting the score to 5-2 with two on for the top of the lineup. The runners moved up to second and third base on a wild pitch by Barnes with Frazier at the plate. Frazier ended up walking, thus loading the bases for Marte with one down. Marte smoked a line drive to left field, but Benintendi made a great break on the ball and made the catch well over his head while in a full sprint to make the catch. It was a sac fly, but that ...

Opening Red Sox Game Marks 50-year Tradition For Northampton Trio
Opening Red Sox Game Marks 50-year Tradition For Northampton Trio

... Tony Conigliaro’s comeback in 1969 after recovering from injury and again in 1975 after returning to the Red Sox. Noonan, O’Brien and Niemczyk were certainly dedicated to keeping their now 50-year streak. They’ve all missed school and work to attend the home openers over the years. Out of 49 opening games, they left only one early, because it was pouring and they thought it would get rained out. Aside from that one game in 1981, the friends have been at every home opener, rain or shine. Early on, Noonan would call in October to order tickets in advance for the big opening day game. In 1987, he started getting season tickets, for box seats by the third-base dugout, where the three sat until recent years. For the 20 th anniversary of their opening day tradition, Noonan, O’Brien and Niemczyk rode to Fenway in a limousine with Milton Cole, sports writer at the Daily Hampshire Gazette. This year, for the 50 th anniversary, they plan to take a limo with Pat Goggins of Goggins Real Estate. The most exciting opening game was in 1998, Noonan said. ...

Yankees-red Sox Exhibit At Mattatuck
Yankees-red Sox Exhibit At Mattatuck

... The most unusual artifact is the Yankee Stadium home plate used on Oct. 8, 1956, Game 5 of the World Series, in which Don Larsen pitched a perfect game. It is signed by Larsen and Yankees catcher Yogi Berra. A pennant honoring the retirement of Carl Yastrzemski is seen in a framed collection of Yaz memorabilia. Roger Maris' "61 in '61" accomplishment is remembered in a collection of autographs by more than 40 of the pitchers who gave up those home runs. The history of Waterbury in baseball is honored, with a mention of Red Sox center fielder Jimmy Piersall, the most famous Waterbury native to make the major leagues. The exhibit's show-stopper is a painted and drawn artwork by Adam Port, "Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man in the World," which is so realistic that from a distance it looks like a photograph. The show will be up until after the World Series. If the Yanks or the Sox make it, fans can come to the Mattatuck and cheer them on. If they don't, they can come to console themselves that spring will soon be here ...

Why I’m Picking The Red Sox To Win It All
Why I’m Picking The Red Sox To Win It All

... selfish reasons that I, unlike virtually every other Red Sox fan I know, have picked them to win the World Series, just like last year. There is no downside to picking the Sox and being wrong and there is all the upside in the world to being right. It’s also a branding exercise: I want to be the guy telling you we’ve always got a chance, because I was the panicked one for a long time, and I have learned, at long last, that it is no way to live. My moment of humility came in 1999, in the American League Division Series in which the Sox fell down 2 games to 0 to the Indians, and I exchanged some depressing emails with my high school friends (we had moved on to college). One of my them was not swayed by any panic and, in fact, was clearly annoyed by it - the general panic, not mine, specifically, though I certainly didn’t help. After the Sox rebounded to win the series, he sent an email to our group of friends that I can still recite from ...

For Red Sox And Fans, Lofty Expectations A Rite Of Spring
For Red Sox And Fans, Lofty Expectations A Rite Of Spring

... boasted an enviable young core with more prospects on the way prior to 2014. They finished last each of the next two seasons. Which is what makes the most relevant line we can cull from ownership one of Henry's from last winter. "If there's one thing we've learned in the last few years, especially in the American League, it's getting more and more difficult to predict anything," he said. Indeed, the 2012 Yankees are the only team to repeat as A. L. East champions in the last decade. The percentage of teams that return to the postseason in consecutive years has diminished in baseball, from 59 percent in the first 11 years of the wild-card era to 44 percent in the last 11. At least half of the previous year's playoff teams have failed to make it back to October the next season in each of the last 11 years. Keep that in mind while you're penciling in Boston and Cleveland and Chicago and Washington and Los Angeles in your postseason bracket. However, establishing that living up to high expectations is hard doesn't mean it's necessarily bad to have them in the ...

Here’s Why You Still Can’t Stream Red Sox Games Online In New England
Here’s Why You Still Can’t Stream Red Sox Games Online In New England

... in the offseason. As the Red Sox take the field for the first time this season Monday, countless numbers of baseball fans in offices across New England are asking the same question: How can I stream Opening Day — or any Sox game, for that matter — online. The answer is you can’t. At least not quite yet. Sports Business Journal’s Eric Fisher reported Monday that “technical issues” have delayed the MLB’s planned rollout this year for the Red Sox and four other teams until at least mid-April. That means that anyone living in NESN’s broadcast area (which covers all of New England, with the exception of Connecticut’s Fairfield County) have no online streaming options for the Red Sox’s opening game Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Red Sox fans outside NESN’s broadcast territory can watch their team’s games online on MLB. TV, a paid subscribers-only streaming platform. Meanwhile, due to MLB blackout rules, baseball fans in New England will have to watch Sox games ...
