... help send the hands of the doomsday clock moving backwards to safety. Providing an 'opening'. 'We have to give him the opening,' former U. S. ambassador to Russia Thomas Pickering told VOA when asked whether he believes Trump will be swayed by news of the clock's advance to midnight. 'Hopefully he will hear' the suggestions from scientists and others advocating a re-start of arms reduction talks with Russia and raising the alarm about the effects of climate change. Other factors affecting the clock's movement this year are the growing risks from cyberattacks and emerging technologies in life sciences. The Doomsday Clock has faced criticism over the decades as more art than science. Its 'back and forth' movement is ridiculed, while the scientists behind it are labeled scaremongers. 'When it comes to nuclear weapons people have become complacent,' Krauss told VOA. 'So we owe it to the world to risk being labeled scaremongers just to encourage people to think about the problem.'. The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by a group of concerned scientists who had been involved with the top secret Manhattan Project, which built the first ...

In their Times op-ed, Krauss and Titley wrote. We understand that Mr. Trump has been in office only days, that many of his cabinet nominees are awaiting confirmation and that he has had little time to take official action. He has expressed disbelief in the scientific consensus on global warming. He has shown a troubling propensity to discount or reject expert advice related to international security. And his nominees to head the Energy Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Office of ...

And she laid out the interview in front of her studio audience yesterday, beginning with, “Can we talk? I mean real talk.”. She began rejecting the idea that Paris has a Rolling Stone cover at all,  claiming she’s only there because of her father.  Williams said, “She has not made her mark on her own. You cannot be on the cover of one of the most prestigious entertainment magazines and just be the daughter of.”. That’s a big charge, and she didn't back down. Williams appeared most upset about Jackson identifying as black, after her father supposedly raised her that way. “Black is not what you call yourself, it’s what cops see when they got steel to your neck on the ...

The Indian media noted that the government had postponed the tests for a year or more to avoid diplomatic opposition to its membership application to Missile Technology Control Regime, a 34-nation group established to prevent the proliferation of missiles capable of carrying a 500-kilogram warhead more than 300 km. The group accepted India into its ranks in July last year. Similarly, a US campaign for India’s membership to the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, which regulates access to nuclear technologies, has been increasingly gathering global ...

That “two and a half minutes” is nothing to do with time at all in these announcements. They could as easily say “two miles” or “two thousand miles”. Then the announcement would be “Doomsday is becoming one mile closer”. Or “Doomsday is becoming a thousand miles closer”. The "two and a half minutes” there is essentially meaningless. A metaphor or symbolic. It’s no wonder that scared people find it confusing. It is vivid imagery for effect. This is called “hyperbole”. It's a vivid image of the world about to be destroyed with just two and a half minutes to save it. But that is just an image and not to be taken literally at all. The things they talk about may some of them happen ...

S. and Soviet Union–possessed a total of 70,000 nuclear bombs. But the nuclear weapons disarmament movement has resulted in the U. S. and Russia now possessing about 15,000 nuclear weapons. Yet the knowledge to create such weapons had proliferated. Presently, there are 9 nations that possess nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency estimates that 20 to 30 other nations possess the capability of making nuclear weapons.
